Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The nextbox and bluray. Do you want it???

With all the recent talk of the next Xbox, I began to think about the disc format. Is bluray important anymore, and was it ever.

Bluray is still very expensive in my country. So surely that means it costs alot for bluray discs to be made. Is this due to the mass market not ever catching on? I don't know.

would it be better for Microsoft to save money and not include bluray. Where I live bluray space has decreased, not increased. 2 New tvs are about to come out wiv 2 tb had with internet browsing and HD film downloads to buy. Add to that Microsoft already has the largest selection of streamed and downloadable HD films via libe marketplace.

Is it really wise for Microsoft to throw money at a format that clearly isn't and probably never will become mass market?

As long as it plays DVDs, the nextbox will have both the future of entertainment on streams and downloads and the best of the disc market in DVD.

As I already have bought and rented for the last 2 years completely via online services it is a no brained for me to say Microsoft should save money.

What do you think. Where does HD films future lie?

It doesn't need to but I would welcome it.

Bigger HDD with more storage space and more downloadable content being downloaded at faster speeds. Online distribution saves on production, storage and transportation costs. Physical media is more expensive than online streaming/downloading. Cheap software can be downloaded instantly by the consumer and stored on the HDD.

It would be a nice feature to have, but it's not essential.

yes it does need it and will have it MS will try to make the nextbox more of a home entertainment system then a gaming console (like there starting to do with the 360)

There's no reason not to use blu-ray honestly. Blu-ray discs aren't expensive to make, and using them for games would benefit everyone as it would bring the NextBox in line with the Wii U and PS3/4.
On top of that you would be satisfying everyone who actually do buy blu-ray discs, and not making the PS4 more attractive (as Microsoft wants to rule your livingroom, they would want to shut Sony out as much as possible).

DVD have already proven a limiting factor this generation in some games, and with asset size only increasing for the next generation, DVD will become even more of a bottleneck.

MS needs to use blu ray or an equivalent in their nextbox the 360 is already a joke because of only having dvd making many games needed multiple disks this gen, and download only is just stupid, you'd need an HDD of at least 1T and a strong internet connection, which would barely be possible in NA never mind the vast majority of countries consoles sell to and ps3 has 360 beat with netflicts so I don't think they could win in movies with downloadable only movies either

They should go with holographic disks. Prototypes last I saw could hold 300 GB and they with more work could fit over 1 TB. However I doubt it would come cheap, even in a couple years.

Edit: According to the wiki it can hold 6 TB. Maybe a little much for well every game, but you never know I am sure Square could fill that up with some insanely long CG cut scenes.

is that cheap as BD?

What? The 360 is more of a multimedia box than all the rest this Gen. No bluray has meant nothing. It has any HD film u can want. Unlimited music downloads. Taylor made console apps. Video social networking. Controller free multimedia. And more selection than Wii and ps3 when you include all media. So what are you referring to?

I understand you may want bluray. As that's what the thread is about. But realistically is it worth it of bluray is already dwindling?

its a valid point.
