My friend TT_Makaveli was wondering about this, so am I and so are many launch PS3 owners worried about their PS3's future as many launch PS3's are dying now.
The answer is a simple yes or no.

My launch ps3 is still working except for the blue ray drive, so it's pretty much useless to me now. I never bothered to get it fixed because a few days later they had a 100 euro discount on the ps3, so i took that instead. Now I still have a half broken ps3 lying around.
My PS3 is Slim.
But my friend had a 60GB Fat working fine... so YES for him.

That PS3 is still good for Netflix, PSN, playing MP3's, and browsing porn. Don't ignore the finer features!
Not only it is still working but it has thousands and thousands of "on" time. Its use to play music all the time, plus blu ray and games. I think the vertical position is the way to go with the old 60 GB if you dont want over heating problem. Theres a big difference between both position when it comes to heat, I tried it.
Launch PS3 60Gb died about a half year ago, then resurrected. After resurrection it began having GPU issues.
That same PS3 60GB then had the BD drive give out and the HDMI connector crap out in early February.
In late February my launch 60GB went zombie on me and the BD drive began working again, but the HDMI slot was still fried. Had to use component. GPU issues no longer noticable.
Now the component output isn't working right and only will display up to 480i, but the PS3 60GB still reads DVDs and BD movie/games.
This sucka has heart! He refuses to go down! How long until it displays 1080p again?!

IT BECAME IMMORTAL BECAUSE IT LOVES YOU! 
i have the 60Gb model died 4 times and resurrected
but still i have it since i don 't pay when it is burned i am regular to sony service
