Forums - Gaming Discussion - Report: Wii U GPU uses R770

http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/14/wii-u-has-last-gen-radeon-inside-still-more-powerful-than-ps3-a/

Certainly someone more learned in graphix technology could verify this, but what it means is anywhere between the 4670 at the low end and 4890 at the high end?

So Power 7 CPU and R770 Graphics card. I must warn everyone that the machine translation these sites seem to be using can't quite make out whether the original source is just speculating or not.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

There are no way the Wii U GPU is a HD 4890... that's almost 4x more powerful than GPU equipped in X360.

I guess it a HD 46XX (RV730)... so 50% more powerful than PS3/360 GPU.

Just to compare the actual Radeon GPU family on PC is R900 (Northern Islands)... the R700 is a chip from 2008.

Hmmmm so that is the possible GPU for the Wii U? That's kinda low. I am using a Sapphire Radeon HD 5830 which kinda blows that out the water. However, it is powerful compared to the 5 year + consoles....go figure lol.

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

:/

What in the world could possibly allow you to automatically assume its not at the higher end of that line?

It has to run:

1. HD 1080p @60fps

plus

2. 1-4 (though I think max of 2) SD screens via streaming.

I think that if this is Nintendo's goal, it very well could be the higher end card architecture.

Considering off the shelf cards are only about $30 max price difference in this level, I think its just as likely it will be based on any spectrum the R700 offers.

For consoles it's not low... the R700 is two generation ahead X360 GPU (R500 based).

More info on the card.

Its actually quite impressive and will definitely offer a solid jump from previous gen.

I don't think MSony would consider the next architecture up as that would add significant cost and heat... IF they move to launch in 2013 as I suspect.

If they hold off for 2015 or so, then it could be a step up with a 5000 series chip or the Evergreen family. (assuming they all stick with ATI)

Because the HD 46XX could do that... the HD 4890 runs Crysis (the first for PC... way way more beautiful and heavy than Crysis 2) in 1080p.

And of course... the Zelda HD showed for Wii U runs easy and better in HD 46XX.

Can someone simplify this for the less educated people in terms of chips and grafic cards n all that.....please

Could be in power reference?

HD 4890 (chip RV770) = 4x (or more) the power of X360's GPU (chip R500)
HD 4670 (chip RV730) = 2x (or less) the  power of X360's GPU (chip R500)

So... what the article says is that the wii u might end up being between 2x-4x times more powerful than the X360 in terms of graphics??
