Forums - Sony Discussion - SONY's in Trouble Next Generation: It's Current IP's Dont Not have the Power to Sell Console's + A Past Mistake may come back to Haunt Them!

@Xxain: PS3 has no universal IP's because the PS3 userbase has no specific genre preference (unline the MS/Nintendo userbase).

These titles don't need to be exclusive. They just need to BE there. The array of first party titles are merely a counterweight against other consoles. Same with MS. Since when did MS get lots of 3rd party exclusives? Pretty much never. The 360 is damn successful though.

The console war has long shifted from having third party exclusives to providing the best experiences, having the widest appeal, and yes, first and second party exclusives. While Sony has no killer system sellers outside of GT, they have a great array of games acting as that system seller. And it won't go anywhere next gen.

I genuinely hope that this thread is a joke. Then again, I'm afraid that it's serious.

The thread is definetely serious.

Double negative in the thread title. Is that on purpose?

As for Sony`s line-up. It`s evident that none of them, besides GT, is a match to a Halo/Gears of War or Mario/Zelda. But you also need to remember that most of Sony`s franchises you mentioned were created this generation.

Why do they need to be a Halo or Mario? What Sony just needs to do is with it's development studios it owns release a decent stream of 1st party games for it's system. Most sell well over 1 million, most make a profit.

But like you mention most of the IPs were created this generation. I'm pretty sure next generation, Sony studios will produce many more new IPs for gamers to enjoy exclusively on the new Playstation console.

When i mentioned Halo and Mario i was just referring to their weight in the gaming industry and they do drive hardware. It`s like when someone thinks of those two consoles, they mainly think of those two games.
In my opinion, that`s what Sony is lacking: a big name; a name that people think of when they think of Playstation.

Yeah, i believe that will happen. Sony has very talented developers on their side!

-They sold a bunch of those titles for a few million. If it makes money, it doesn't need to go. It they keep alowing development teams to have freedom they could get lucky and get the right combination.

-Sounds like SONY's new focus is to make hardware that's easy to develop software on

-The market's changing. SONY hasn't said what they're doing yet

Sony isn't going to be in trouble next gen for these reasons:

-The PS4 will likely be more powerful then the Wii U at launch, so 3rd parties will flock to the PS4 and give the PS4 the best version of games just like they are doing now.

-As long as Sony can make good sequels and new IPs each gen, they won't need to have a huge system seller. Keep in mind that, while Halo and Mario can carry a system, Nintendo and Microsoft don't make as many new IPs each gen as Sony does. Even if 3rd parties abandon Sony next gen, they can carry themselves with new IPs and other games and stuff. Sony has 14 internal studios. It's not like they can't deliver a steady flow of PS3/4 games when the going gets tough.

-One last thing, unless Sony fucks up catastrophically with the PS4, the 3rd parites will still be there. That alone will help Sony.

They can always get Crash back or buy Sega. It would take time, but Sonic can be that dominant if in Sony's hands....

Oh...is SEGA up for sale? I had no idea.

Another guy trying to predict the future and Sony is always doomed.
