A former police officer I knew (who worked on the sex crimes unit) complained that many women didn't take the most basic steps to protect themselves and, as a result, were constantly "Victims". This doesn't make what happens to them any less of a crime, but it is something that can be entirely prevented had these women taken any personal responsiblity for their own protection.

To use an example, a small group of women go to a bar where they don't know many people, dress up in a provocative way and flirt with a lot of guys to get free drinks, drink excessively and use recreational drugs, and split up as a group leaving each of them completely defenceless against an attack.

I'd hardly call the provocative clothing the main reason why they get raped. As for the flirting for free drinks, well if guys want to pay for sex, there's such a thing as a prostitute. Also, aren't recreational drugs illegal in the first place?

The clothing is not the direct cause, but the clothing certainly contributes and is indicative of the mindset that leads to her being raped. It doesn't matter what she does, she ends up being a victim because she doesn't take her personal safety seriously.

The drinking and drugs definately show that one does not take his/her safety serious. But the clothes? The clothes aren't what cause the women to be careless. Instead of telling them that they shouldn't "dress like sluts", they should be told that they shouldn't drink too much when they're at parties, or that they shouldn't do drugs, which is illegal anyways. The clothing is at best the equivalent of someone owning an expesive phone and talking on it on the street. The "dress likes a slut" part is just misogynistic society at work.

Dunno what all the hoppla is about, he was right. You dress like a slut then you're gonna get unwanted attention, that's obvious. BUT that doesn't mean you deserve to be raped, groped ect any more than if you dressed like a sunday school teacher. He was just making an obvious fact though :-S

Women who dress revealingly should take more precaution when going out such as going home with friends rather than alone etc but the blame lays solely with the perpetrator. Don't care how drunk (or not) you get, rape is a serious crime and if one has it in them to rape, then it is likely they look for women alone then a half naked women.

I find the whole 'slutwalk march' ridiculous. There are 11 and 12 year old girls walking there and for what?

The police officer could've perhaps used different words, but what he said is in essence correct.

Dunno what this has to do with this forum and internet.

^I mean come on. These 1st world protestors could be doing something actually worthwhile.

So women are to blame because they get raped? What's next? Blaming people who get robbed because they have things of value in their house?

No all that was said is that if they dress in a certain way the chances of being raped increase.

I would call that good advice.

Its really not ...

Go to the average club and pay attention to what women are wearing, the vast majority of women will be dressed in a way that is not dramatically different that what you would see them wear to school or work, and a small portion of women are dressed in a very provocative way that would stand out in every situation. The difference is that most women go to the club to have a good time with their friends, and the women who dress "slutty" go to the bar specifically to attract a lot of attention from men so that they can drink (and possibly do drugs) without paying for it.

The dressing in a provocative way and getting into this kind of dangerous position are heavily interconnected; and if the women took her personal safety seriously she wouldn't be dressing in that way to get that kind of attention from men simply because of the "perks" that come from it.

No, this is definately the "blame the victim" mentality at work. What's all this nonsense about revealing clothing increasing the chances of getting raped? There's only 1 entity responsable for rape, and that's the rapist! Raping someone is wrong, under any circumstances.

We live in a so-called civilised society. There's not such thing as saying "she was wearing a sexy shirt and I just couldn't help myself", which is exactly what that cop was suggesting. Are "sluts" somehow fair game for rapists, or what? What's with this constant fear of female sexuality that men have, which makes them try to repress women?

What's this guy suggesting, that these women werar burqas? Maybe he should be going around telling men about the consiquences they face if they try to rape a woman (and possibly do a better job of making sure rapists are punished).

i didn't know that trying to show less of their boobs, and ass is like wearing a burqa. dam thanks, this info really helps oh well i guess that alot of old women wear burqa, i will go and tell them islam tells you to wear burqa and you aren't muslim so take off the burqa your wearing and show us your boobs. dam thanks sapphi i will tell them sapphi told me. I guess both of us are islamophobes XD.

As I said, talking on an expensive phone on the street also is more likely to lead to you getting mugged, yet I never hear anyone tell people to keep avoid talking on their mobile phones in public.

The dressing in a provocative way and getting into this kind of dangerous position are heavily interconnected; and if the women took her personal safety seriously she wouldn't be dressing in that way to get that kind of attention from men simply because of the "perks" that come from it.

The dressing provocatively is not what causes women to wind up in such dangerous situations, so instead of telling them to not "dress like sluts", he should've told them to not talk to strange individuals, avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol when around unknown people, and avoid drugs (which are illegal in the first place). Recomending they take up self defense and carry some sort of protection with them like pepper spray, a pocket knife, an electric zapper thingy (or a gun if it's legal) would've also been appropriate. "Provocative clothing" is also very subjective. I know conservative people who think that women wearing jeans is "indecent" and "provocative".

Also, women are punished by society for not repressing their sexuality. The fact that the world "slut" is only applied to them, and that there's practically no such thing as "slutty clothing" for a man proves this. Sluts get too much of a bad rep.
