Maybe this is a bit of a side comment, but I laugh and roll my eyes every time I see a girl dressed in a sexy/revealing outfit who then complains about all the attention/flirting/looks she gets from guys.

I mean come on... It's like they totally don't get human nature at all.

The policeman could have said it in a more graceful fashion, but I agree with what he told them. Telling someone that their actions may increase/decrease the chances of becoming a victim =/= it's their fault.

Then again... there is the concept of "well.. you had it coming for acting like that," which I would actually agree with. If you go to the edge of a cliff and start doing a shuffle dance right at the edge and fall over, or if you walk up to a dog who looks like he wants to bite your neck off, and he does, you really did have it coming for acting that way.

Failing to take good precaution to avoid a bad situation doesn't necessarily make it your fault, but it's a sign of idiocy imo.

But oh well, survival of the fittest, as they say.

Agreed.

They are so intent on their so-called 'human rights', they don't realize how incredibly stupid their actions are.

What actions are stupid? The only person who's acting stupidly is the police officer. And if it weren't for these so-called "human rights" you wouldn't be posting in this forum or using the Internet.

I find the whole 'slutwalk march' ridiculous. There are 11 and 12 year old girls walking there and for what?

The police officer could've perhaps used different words, but what he said is in essence correct.

Dunno what this has to do with this forum and internet.

^I mean come on. These 1st world protestors could be doing something actually worthwhile.

Sounds to me like the policeman is victimized for saying something that some people didn't want to hear.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Whilst I agree with the concept of not blaming the victim, I think the idea of "slut walks" is misguided and way over the top.

So women are to blame because they get raped? What's next? Blaming people who get robbed because they have things of value in their house?

What woman wants to hear that she's responsable for some man raping her?

@ Sapphi_Snake

I don't see how you can argue that by a girl dressing provocatively she raises the chances of a sexual crime occuring against her?

Whilst I agree that most rapists will rape irregardless of circumstances suchas the clothing the victim is wearing many rapists are opportunistic drunks where clothing of the victim would be a major factor in determining whether they attack or not.

Yes, and having a nice car or talking on an expensive phone on the street will raise the chances of someone mugging you. Should people live their lives in fear? Rape is ILLEGAL. It's also an action commited by an individual, and the person who commits rape is the only one at fault. If we want to help women prevent rapes, we should be teaching them how to defend themselves. However the policeman's attitude and his "adice" is not as much connected to helping women prevent rape, as it is connected to misogynism and the repression of women's sexuality.

A former police officer I knew (who worked on the sex crimes unit) complained that many women didn't take the most basic steps to protect themselves and, as a result, were constantly "Victims". This doesn't make what happens to them any less of a crime, but it is something that can be entirely prevented had these women taken any personal responsiblity for their own protection.

To use an example, a small group of women go to a bar where they don't know many people, dress up in a provocative way and flirt with a lot of guys to get free drinks, drink excessively and use recreational drugs, and split up as a group leaving each of them completely defenceless against an attack.

I'd hardly call the provocative clothing the main reason why they get raped. As for the flirting for free drinks, well if guys want to pay for sex, there's such a thing as a prostitute. Also, aren't recreational drugs illegal in the first place?
