Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How will Nintendo adopt multimedia with the Wii U?

I just want to ask you people how Nintendo will adopt multimedia with the Wii U?

In the past, they haven't been very media savvy, so that is something to think about, but they are getting there with the 3DS. The 3DS has music and video players, as well as Netflix so with the Wii U, I think that they will at least add a Blu Ray/DVD/CD player. One thing that I don't see them doing is putting music up for download like on the PS3.

So how do you think that they will adopt multimedia?

The wii u will be too awesome to use media features. Though if if their is any its just a tool and a another reason to turn on the system. I'm guessing they will just have as many media features as the wii has right now

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

While I can't claim to know anything more than what is announced about WiiU, I don't think the Wii U will have a massive leap concerning multimedia capabilities. The Wii has for example, an internet browser, BBC Iplayer, Netflix in the US and the photo channel. These will surely be replicated with the WiiU. I expect most changes in multimedia capabilities to be improvements in quality rather than quantity, existing functions will be expanded rather than being added to.

If they don't add that stuff, then it's cuz they want to keep the Wii U at an affordable price. The lowest price they are comfortable with.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

The extra multimedia capabilities of the PS3 or Xbox360: like DLNA, Bluray, streaming, etc; can be found in multiple devices by now, ranging from bluray's, HTPC's to even TV's. The only multimedia features they could add are the ones that cost nearly nothing since you can obtain them with many other devices.

Hmm... well, Nintendo is not going to add in blu-ray or DVD playback, since doing so would require cutting a license cost per system sold to the proper groups. In an effort to keep their costs down, they will not do this. (Besides, how many things does the average household have these days that can already play DVDs?) I do see them doing more with pictures, especially now that the tablet controller has a camera built in. Internet and Netflix I think also are givens. But, much more beyond that... I don't think there will be much. They might surprise us, but don't get hopes up too high...

The Wii can already do streaming with WiiCr, the link is below.

I would certainly expect Nintendo to include Netflix in the Wii U, and probably other internet based media services (youtube for example), and possibly even allow people to stream videos or music from their PC, but I wouldn't expect to see any kind of disc based media supported. In other words, if Nintendo doesn't have to pay royalties for it they might include it.

I don't think it will be. I think netflix on Wii was surprising though, Nintendo seem to be reluctant in this field.

That would be awesome.  Then I could move my media center PC out of my TV stand and into a place with better cooling.
