E3 2011: Microsoft incorporating Kinect into all first-party games

Video Q&A: Game Studios boss Phil Spencer says internal development houses will integrate motion-sensing tech, but no mandate to do so.

LOS ANGELES--Microsoft continued to heavily push Kinect functionality at it's 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing, with the publisher trotting out a number of third parties who had committed to the Xbox 360's motion-sensing technology. Of course, one of the biggest advocates for Kinect is remains the platform holder itself.

In an interview with GameSpot, Microsoft Game Studios head Phil Spencer said that he believes all first-party games going forward will incorporate Kinect functionality.

"It's not a mandate that everything we do in first-party has to support Kinect right now," he said. "But I will say, specifically with voice, that there are some things that just seem to make navigating and playing games so much easier, that I would guess the answer will be yes in the end, that you'll see all first-party games using some form of Kinect functionality."

"Whether it's voice in Forza or head-tracking in Forza, which you wouldn't say is somehow turning the Forza gameplay experience on it's head," he continued. "Rather, it's just using the advantages of what Kinect brings to make the experience better. So I think there's some specific examples where Kinect makes everything better."

If it's not mandatory then this is not a big problem.

What I don't get is the need of Kinect to use the voice commands. Can't a headset do that?

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

If they would simply allow the headsets everyone already has to be used for voice commands, nobody would buy a 150$ microphone.

Isn't it quite ironic that voice control has become Kinect's most appreciated feature? The price for the required hardware is almost zero, pretty much every 360 owner already has it, voice control has been possible for years, yet it was hardly ever implemented.

If it's optional then don't sweat it. If they go the Sony route i.e make Kinect an alternate not the primary then all is well in my books.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

So true, so funny and yet so sad.

I don't think X360 owners have anything to fear with this news article unless you completely think kinect is trash, which I know some people do. It looks like Kinect support will not be mandated for its core titles, but optional. Used for something that "enhances" game play according to Microsoft. I highly doubt they are going to make the new Halo trilogy exclusively use kinect where you have to be using motions to shoot guns, navigate, and interact. It will likely be that you can have the full experience with Halo using a standard controller, but they will leave the option of kinect open so that if you want to use Kinect in certain interaction or voice aspects of the game, you can. I think Microsoft realizes if they made their star title, Halo, a completely Kinect exclusive they would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Really, is this any different than Sony supporting Move on every first party game they can or 3d support. It only makes sense that MS support a device that is increasing their sales. With more support hopefully you will see better implementation of Kinect
