Forums - Nintendo Discussion - WiiU to only support 1 tablet controller?? Miyamoto speaks...

This is the only way I play wii games.

Wii U - Nintendo's Hardcore Ghetto

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I'm guessing they didn't realize the amount of resources one of the controllers required from the system when they initially decided to add a screen on the controller. It would've been really cool to have two player Pokemon duels if you could use the controller screen to call out monsters and stuff. And what happens if the controller breaks? Selling it only bundled with a system sounds like a dumb idea. I'm still determined to get a Nintendo console though, so I guess I'll just settle for the 3DS.

I suspect that this is one of those things where consumer reaction will change their opinion ...

While I doubt we will see 4 controller support, I don't think they would have too many problems supporting a second controller.

I Agree. While 4 tablets (btw, does it have a name?) are unlikely, the possibility to use 2 in certain games may be viable.

Sure, the new controller has a screen, but in terms of buttons or analog sticks a classic controller has the same, and even the combo wiimote+nunchuk has as many buttons.

And why would 4 people play local mutiplayer with 4 of those? For the screen? If 4 people are playing then there is the TV, otherwise there would be no difference between that and playing multiplayer online.

Having said that, for minigames titles like Wario, the use of 2 tablets (2 teams with  tablet each) may be fun.

Please excuse my bad English.

Currently gaming on a PC with an i5-4670k@stock (for now), 16Gb RAM 1600 MHz and a GTX 1070

Steam / Live / NNID : jonxiquet    Add me if you want, but I'm a single player gamer.

For four people I doubt that any complex images could be rendered for each controller.

Keep in mind that even if the controllers have only 480p screens (and it seems they have higher res than that?), rendering four 480p images takes much more computational effort than rendering one 1080p image. So graphics would have to be much simpler than the Wii U can do at its best.

To those asking what is wrong with the wiimote, thw answer is nothing, it is nearly preference.

Then to those posting the nunchuk in response to my question, that is only 1 analog.

Then to those posting classic controller pro, that just makes more shit I need to buy in order to play games the way I want.

I was excited for this console and it just doesn't seem to be what I need. That may change but it really isn't a big deal if someone doesn't find this console to be that great.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

My two cousins always fight for who gets to use the black controller... Now I imagine the fights for who will use the tablet controller... If this is true WiiU will be a bad console for peopl with two small children...

That's not necessarily true ... If you assume that the TV screen was split with 4 different viewports each of those would have a resolution of 960x540 which is higher than 480p.

Of course, what is rendered to the TV also eats away resources and there would be trade-offs regarding what could be rendered to each screen and the TV; especially as the number of tablet controllers increases.

But that's for the pixel shaders only. My understanding is that each separate viewport takes other significant resources as well, which is why splitscreen takes more horsepower than just a single full-screen for example.

It wouldn't be wise to limit it to only one U controller. Sure, the graphics will look worse when using more controllers, just like it does when you play split-screen, but the option needs to be there.

The WiiU won't be a big local multiplayer hit if they put such a limit on it.
