Zusa said: I saw Dangan Ronpa at a local games store. The concept looks pretty interesting, and it seems somewhat reminiscent of Phoenix Wright. It's a little hard to figure out if I should buy it though. I gather that it's some kind of Murder Mystery game, which sounds pretty cool. Would you suggest this game to someone that isn't big into visual novels? |
Visual novel is 1/3rd of the game's content. You will spend a lot of time talking to the other characters, developing various relationships and trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
The next 1/3rd of the game is almost like a pseudo point 'n' click adventure. You move around the school in first person, and you can examine objects in various rooms which give you clues towards solving murders/progressing the story. You can also just explore the school at your leisure in various points.
The final part of the gameplay is the trials. These are more like the visual novel elements - you'll see a load of chatter from characters on screen, alongside various hints, and you have to disprove statements by showing evidence to the contrary. It's really cool, but quite difficult to explain.
Dangan Ronpa isn't a traditional visual novel, and I think everyone should give it a try because it's one of my favourite games of the year. But you do have to enjoy a certain amount of 2D-portraits-talking-on-screen to be able to enjoy the title, and you have to go in to it wanting to be able to follow the story, because it does rely on story as much as it does gameplay.
I'd say give it a try but the choice is completely up to you!
