Well, Sony is capturing both and it's working!

They have reduced the lead between 360 and PS3. That way they wont abandon hardcore or casual gamers like Nintendo and MS have.

MS is focusing on Kinect and forgetting about others.
Nintendo had focused on Casual in the Wii, so even 3rd parties Had abandoned them.

3rd parties had abandoned Nintendo long before Wii. Though it was not intended to be so, Wii was a big middle finger to them for years of screwing Nintendo over, and well-deserved

I remember when I first saw the announcement of the Nintendo Wii. My first thought was honestly, "Ok, Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot! Motion controls? A controller that looks like a TV remote? Really?". But I was definitely proven wrong over time. Even though Nintendo closed the door for the most part to 3rd party developers they hit a hugely popular chord. I had been so caught up in core gaming that I never stopped to think a casual crowd could be attracted to video games. I have to hand ti to Nintendo. The Wii is one of the most clever inventions I have witnessed. albeit Im still hardcore at heart, but their success was a huge suprise to me. Even at this moment Im still trying to wrap my brain around the focus of Wii U. It will be interesting to see its uses when the full reveal for the system is shown.

Thanks. Sorry its so long.  Sometimes I write a book when getting a point across on a certain topic, so therefore many of my long posts probably don't get read much, but so be it. Good topic, and you had some good thoughts and and a good perspective in your analysis.

All I can say is that Nintendo's show was really surprising, but Microsoft's show was really fun. I can not say that about Sony's show. At the Microsoft show I did not care what game they were showing, they all looked hella fun. Then Nintendo was just strange, or I cannot really explain what I thought of it, but it looked very promising! Both companies showed games that I am really excited for (other than another look alike mario, even though it will probably be spectacular) such as Zelda, luigis mansion now, Call of Duty, etc. Plus Just got a 3DS off craigslist for 150 dollars and 9 DS games. So we downloaded the Excitebike 3d and other games. It is alot of fun. Too bad there are not more games yet, but I recommend people get the 3DS when the new/old Zelda comes out for it on the 19th. I do wish that they would have stuck with the XL size though! One last thing I would say is that there were a couple games for Sony that excited me, but not more than 2-3. Even the Vita left wanting more, but again as with all things we will have to wait and see. I was on the fence about the 3DS, but love it now. Plus back when it first came out the original PSP was cool and sleek. Watched movies on it, played good looking games, but got tired of it fast.

Back when the Wii was released, none of us thought that it was to be a CASUAL system since that fucking word wasnt being used until SHORTLY AFTER. I do not remember hearing that BULLSHIT of a word outside of PORN. The Wii line up in the beginning looked like it was getting core support, with a few party games and such put into the fray. Then suddenly, after knowing that a lot of third party bullshit that they put on the Wii flopped, there were no longer enough core games being made on a yearly basis.

So because Nintendo is going after the "hardcore", and Microsoft is going after the "casual" they are going in the right direction. But Sony who is trying to do both isn't? And the main reason why is you don't think they can be effective at it?

Its funny now that Nintendo is going after the "hardcore", they are going in the right direction and not the wrong direction like Sony and Microsoft were when they launched.

And exclusives do make a huge difference, what would Nintendo be without Mario or the Wii lineup? Where would Microsoft be without Halo or Gears of War. Where would Sony be without Uncharted and Gran Turismo? So to say that exclusives are overrated is ignorant.

1)  Back when the Wii was released, none of us thought that it was to be a CASUAL system since that fucking word wasnt being used until SHORTLY AFTER. I do not remember hearing that BULLSHIT of a word outside of PORN.

2)The Wii line up in the beginning looked like it was getting core support, with a few party games and such put into the fray. Then suddenly, after knowing that a lot of third party bullshit that they put on the Wii flopped, there were no longer enough core games being made on a yearly basis.

The direction they took was more of a less powered system compared to the competition to reduce dev costs which was supposedly a reason for third partys to go to their system. Oh and lets not forget about the horrible image nintendo had since the N64 toward third parties.

I'm glad that Nintendo is going in the "core" direction with decent to amazing third party games coming to the system, with a handful of party esque games. The question is, will Nintendo's image change when people see what they have to offer? I'm expecting more new third party games that cannot be done on the ps3 and 360 by the end of this year to be announced. But of course, It's nintendo so they might get screwed over again.

1)Their were many who thought so and that was also one of the reasons why the Wii got many doom articles...

2) That is not entirely true, the only games that were doing well were party games made by 3d party like Rayman rabbids while others that were not party games like Red steel/ssx blur flopped and it is not like Rayman rabbids was a way better game.... 3d parties just didn't see how you can make a great game with motion controls that would not end up being a party game and it didn't help one of the most hyped Nintendo games Brawl (possible stil has the biggest thread on VG) made people rush to the store for getting gamecube controllers if even Nintendo have a hard time making a great game with motion controls then what should ya expect from a 3d party developpers?

Sony is focusing on 3D? They spent some ten minutes at the conference talking about it.

Sony is focusing on making good hardware with solid gaming lineups, which is what all three of them should be doing - and to some extent, what all of them are doing.

I agree with the OP. That's why Xbox360 will be able to sell an unprecedented 15 million consoles this year. Which is as many as Sony is selling PS3s. Who would have thought that?

I think Sony has some good casual games like LBP, Ratchet & Clank, Modnation Racers, Eyepet, Start the party, 3d Dot Game Heroes, Tumble, Family Game Night with some good PSN casual games like Pixel Junk, Flower, Flow, Fat Princess, Joe Danger etc. They have good line up of core games as well. But Nintendo and Microsoft focused on one category until recently and now they realize that there is another market of casuals (for Nintendo it is Hardcore) and now they are trying to catch up. Nothing to catch up for Sony. They have good position in both the markets.

Yeah I remember those doom articles about the Wii mainly because of its name though. Red steel was utter garbage and was made look "decent" during that e3 conference of 06. Motion controls do not suit fighting games IMO, but they can work out in adventure and shooting games, and even RPGs. There aren't any excuses for 3rd party crappy efforts except for the fact that they couldn't and wouldn't port some of the bigger 3rd party titles to the system because of it being 20x weaker than the competition. But that didn't stop a couple of games from looking the best and standing out from all the games on the Wii (SMG1 and 2). If there were more games made by 3rd parties that had that kind of detail in them, people wouldn't feel cheated on when buying a game, and would obviously end up selling just fine.

Now at the end of the Wiis life, we are seeing a handful of games that dont look half bad (TLS, etc..), but sadly it wont sell well because people seemed to stop caring about the better games coming out on the Wii (which are a handful). I even gave up on the Wii after DKC returns.

Nintendo having  hard time making a great game with motion controls seems to be Nintendos own fault. They didn't really showcase what a Wii game with good graphics and sharp motion controls can do. That game IMO will be Skyward Sword, but it's too late now. Nintendo did this shit to themselves. They set expectations of people too high during e3 06, and this was the result.
