Forums - Microsoft Discussion - The Average Gamer Previews Fable: The Journey. It’s Not On Rails.

At E3 2011 today, Debbie Timmins of The Average Gamer caught a live preview of Fable: The Journey and some detailed info from Peter Molyneux himself.

"The watchword for Lionhead when building this game is “freedom” with the press conference demo intentionally restricted to rails in order to show off the spellcasting and combat system. As Molyneux told us today “You’re free to navigate and move round however you like. Free to take different pathways, free to go off-road."

Awesome! My excitement for that game keeps rising!

OMG MEGATON!!!

Nice catch OP, but unfortunately you have too many Molyneux haters on this site. Can't say its undeserved though - all we need is the 'best game ever' from him!

Seriously now; He also said Fable 3 would use Kinect and that didn't happen. Since'being on rails' is one of the main limitations of Kinect games I would have assumed Lionhead would proudly show us how they solved the problem. Since they didn't show us I'm going to have to say that I don't quite buy it yet.

But, as always, we'll be looking whether Lionhead and Molyneux are worthy of the hype that surrounds them. I would be very surprised if they pull off a killer app, but I'm not discounting it. Maybe 20% chance of being true AND not lame.

Lol 20%.
I could see how a controller would be used to walk around the world and intaract with people and such but spell casting (which I thought was very cool having these hand movements to cast the spell) could use kinect along with driving the horse and many other stuff like that.
Like you said though why not show that at the show unless ms wanted to show just the kinect parts.

from the article:

Edit: For those of you who don’t take Molyneux at his word (can’t think why ;), Lionhead will be showing a not-on-rails demo at GamesCom in August. No official word on a release date. When questioned, Molyneux responded with “Hmm… maybe next year.”

So in august hopefully we'll find out just how much movement there will be.

Wow that sounds great, now work on the perfecting the gameplay and giving us a world as great as the original Fable.

I love you, Peter, but I'm not believing a word you say until I see a god damned acorn that grows into an oak tree over the course of the game.

I bet it will be as revolution as dog mini-map in Fable 2 ;)

In the Gamespot interview he said the game has only been in development for 8 or 9 months although using many elements they had been working on for Milo and Kate.

If you watch his face in any of the interviews he's done when talking about the release date you can see he's very dubious about getting it out next year and is just saying it because that's the official MS statement on the release, "well Microsoft is saying next year so.....yeah!".

Most of this, though I'd kind of rather have it with the color and atmosphere of Fable II and the lore and time period of Fable 1.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.
