Some people are starting to think it will happen soon due to the poor economy that might put the country into a recession due to poor government spending decisions, a declining housing market, and rising gas prices.

What do you guys think. Do you think it could happen? when?

This isn't really a dividing line. Who would fight whom?

The people who like a poor economy, recessions, and rising gas prices

vs.

The people who like a strong economy, a booming GDP, and falling gas prices.

Who will win, and will the anti-happiness contingent choose a side? Stay tuned!

na it would be more the people vs the government. really i think I should have put 2nd revolution but since it would be US citizens vs US government that technically falls under the idea ofa civil war as its US vs US.

Oh, that's a revolution, yes. I suppose that's possible, but we're still the richest country in the world despite all these awful failures, so I doubt it.

yeah see, the problem there is that the US is democracy. There's no oppression where the people's will is being truly stifle. There's no point in revolting against a government because we keep electing them at some interval-any revolt or revolution you're talking about will be a minority and will be easily crushed as they won't have popular support.

Oh yes, and the problems that you're talking are pretty normal. They happen again and again throughout US history and we always recover somehow or someway.

In order to have a civil war you would first need a long standing deep routed conflict between to distinct groups, and an ecconomic change that put massive pressure on this conflict.

An example of this would be in Canada where Alberta has a healthy dislike in the population dense Eastern provinces (read: Ontario) dictating how they're to live, and the Eastern Provinces (read: Qubec) resent Alberta's resource riches. If oil prices skyrocketed and crushed the manufacturing sector in the East, and the federal government heavily taxed the oil industry (or took control of it) and opened old wounds of the National Energy Program I could see a civil war. (Note: this is a very remote possibilty)

I personally don't see anything in the US which is nearly serious enough to cause a civil war

I don't think that will happen but we will likely see a rise in civil disobedience, strikes and that sort of thing.

SSJ has revealed his utter lack of knowledge in regards to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and modern day American politics. Normally, I'd feel bad at attacking someone's post without backing it up with several paragraphs of argument, but I really think the issues with this topic are plain for all to see.

there's a lot of distrust towards the government these days especial post 9-11 but in order for a revolutionary war to happen there would have to be grave problems. Like triple digit inflation and 30-40 percent unemployment and the like. However don't think for a second that the people of the United States wouldn't be able to muster an all out attack on the government. Push people hard enough and they will do it, history has shown us this.

Thats what elections are for. Some person/party screws up, you vote another in. If there was ever a time for a revolution, it wouldve been in the Great Depression. Recessions arent that big a deal.
