Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Why do I want a screen on my controller?

Answer: I probably don't.

I can imagine some games will use it in a gimmicky fashion, a few games maybe even in a worthy fashion.

But in general I don't get why they didn't make it an add-on. The controller is huge and the screen doesn't look worth it. Even ignoring the fact that it might be expensive and use a lot of battery.

I think the touch screen on the controller is a beyond fantastic idea and anyone who thinks otherwise is simply being small minded but I just don't understand why you'd want the controller to be that big.

That controller itself looks to be nearly as big as an iPad and I can tell you with complete confidence that holding something that large in a controller position isn't that comfortable. I'll reserve final judgment of course until I hold one, but man, that thing is huge.

And lol WiiU. I thought Vita was bad but Wii U is just silly.

man I'm really excited for it. I wonder how it will work with the games. Did anyone see that new zelda they showed in that montage? great!

Consoles and handhelds are naturally progressing toward the point where they are one and the same. Nintendo is just advancing the gaming industry once again. I look forward to the games that will use this new controller.

So what great things do you expect from the touch screen?

With the Wiimote's pointer you could already kind of "touch" a point in the screen, this is the same thing but on a separate screen.

Dynamic context sensitive controller

Programmable hot keys

RPG menu's

world maps

objectives/tutorials

secret information in local multiplayer games

Inventory screen

HUD elemenents that normally get hidden in cinematic games like Uncharted and the likes

It's another screen, what can't you do with it?

To be fair, Nintendo's mission is to make you realize you want the stuff they're showing. They haven't done that yet, but it's going to be some time before it's out anyway.

I think there's definitely potential in WiiU, some of the "demos" they showed were really cool. But I'm not convinced I need it yet.

.. A Handheldish solution, or an overproportionized NDS.. pick your poison.

AND NO info about the Console itself, .. -_-

BUT there was a scene of Zelda in HD, which was stunning. ^_^

I'm a Foreigner, and as such, i am grateful for everyone pointing out any mistakes in my english posted above - only this way i'll be able to improve. thank you!

Off the top of my head.

-The screen could show a map or inventory or stats allowing the big screen to be HUDless.
-It allows you to play in bed with the TV screen off
-It's touch screen which will allow some interesting mini games/ puzzles.
