I think the mods here show a lot of restraint. At Kotaku, they have something called Ban Mondays where they let their "Ban Hammers" fly freely. They even get people to vote on who should receive bans. I've never been afraid to say stuff on this site but I am definitely more aware when I visit Kotaku. There are a few mods on this site that are better than others. I've seen some of the newer mods here go power trippy at times and threaten bans. I haven't paid much attention as to if they follow through with the bans.
