Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: "NGP dev budgets close to PSP"

RolStoppable said:

That's a misleading title. He says "closer to PSP than PS3", not "close to PSP". Quick example with rough numbers:

AAA development for the PSP: $5 million.

For the PS3: $20 million.

Now the actual development costs for AAA titles on the NGP could be between $10-12 million and the statement would still be true. However, this isn't close to PSP budgets as the number is at least twice as high.

I don't claim to know the exact numbers, but it's worth pointing out how broad of a statement that is from Michael Denny.

And therein lies the problem with relative terms. Whenever I see relative terms used like this, I assume the worst, since it just seems like PR talk to make things seem better than they actually are. But who knows, maybe it's not really all that bad and the development costs actually are pretty close to PSP development costs.

I just don't know what to say anymore.

- NGP is so perfect for developers (they say so, the budget says so, the easy to use development tools prove so)

-Has combined the best features of every handheld to date (touch screen, gyroscope, back touch screen, microphone etc)

- Has comparable graphics to PS3 on its LAUNCH games

- Is said to be competitively priced.

All of the above mean more GAMES for gamers and good quality games from launch itself.....imagine the quality 4-5 years from now.

This deserves a congratulations from he must always be named.

the big worry though is the recent comment saying

"its can't make call, so its not a phone"

AND

"it can't fit in your pocket"

if it was a phone then you are guaranteed to have people carry it 100% with them at all times, but it is not.  now that isn't a game breaker, handhelds have been around forever and they could never call, BUT they could fit in your pocket.  so now why are you bringing it out with you?  not as a phone, and to bring it you NEED to have a bag of some sort to put it in and carry.  I might have to look again better but I dont' seem to recal guys carrying around bags too often.

so its essentially a SMALLER tablet used basically 100% for gaming.  I feel most people will just play this thing at home, and thus gets into the whole, why not just play my ps3/360/wii/pc instead?

"so its essentially a SMALLER tablet used basically 100% for gaming"

why do you say that? with android support and all the other features packed in it seems to me that this thing does almost all of the things a tablet does... furthermore the psp had several apps outside gaming like music player, video player, web browser, skype etc

i say that because why would i play those games on my ngp when i could play them on my tablet?

or why play phone games on an ngp when i can play on my phone.

no one is buying an ngp FOR phone games or tablet games.  They are buying it for its ngp games.

if i wanted phone games i already CARRY a phone.  If i wanted tablet games, Hell its just as easy to carry a tablet as it is to carry an ngp

1. people carried psps before too...they didn't make calls before either..no one cared. People don't buy gaming devices for things like that

2. dunno about others but I couldn't fit the psp into my pocket either...and this thing is smaller than the psp in some dimensions and only SLIGHTLY bigger in others. not an issue whatsoever, never was never will be...and heck even if I could i wont stick that glorious oled screen into a pocket lol

OT: GREAT news and they piling up. should make some people shut up about the topic...maybe

1. i was saying it wasn't a big deal.  Just saying not being a phone means it need to have other reasons why i should carry it around with me.  It is NOT a phone, thus why am i carrying around another device.  I can't make calls, i can't recieve calls, i can't text ect.  So why am i carrying around a psp?  is it for internet? my phone can do that.  is it for email?  my phone can do that, ect.

Which all comes down to the NGP and 3DS essentially only offer their GAMES.  not phone games, not tablet games, not these cheap ass thigns.  The full blown games.  Thats all they have to offer and the only reason one would need them at all.

Now onto the games.  Both systems seem to be coming out with things that will be worthy titles, BUT what can the 3ds do that teh ngp can't?  FIT IN MY POCKET.

so here i am leaving to go wherever.  (work, friends, shopping, movie, ect) just a casual leave.  What do you usually take and look like?  i dont' know about you but i'm wearing normal clothes, jeans/shorts and a shirt of some sort.  i throw my phone in one pocket, wallet in another and then what.  I sure as hell don't carry around a bag or a phanny pack or anything of that sort.  That is just not convenient.  So i can't fit my ngp in my pocket, but i can 3ds.  so that comes wtih, regardless of which i would rather play.  hell i'd rather play a pc game, but i'm not going to carry around my computer.

Who knows when i might take out my 3ds.  i could go the whole day and not use it, or i coudl take it out for a few minutes or a few hours.  I don't make plans to play my handhelds.  they are meant to be a convenience for when you get the chance and feel like playing.  they are not meant to be planned for.  I don't leave the house and PLAN on playing my handhelds EVER, unless i'm going on a plane trip or something.  But how often is that really.

so again it seems my ngp would be sitting at home being played only there.  so again why would i play my ngp when i could play my ps3/360/wii/pc instead?

yea the psp was hard to fit in pocket, thus why no one i know liked it.  the few i know that did get one sold it very soon after.  it was not convenient, which is what handhelds are supposed to be.  Hell imagine if a smart phone came out the size of a ipad.  you can bet no one would buy it.  it would be stupid.

Rol pretty much said it all. And if you really think that the budgets will be comparable to the PSP's, then you must also think that the horsepower is close to the PSP's as well.

again you are trying to generalize with your statement

NGP can do a lot of other things 3ds can't do too but I won't go there..that's a whole new thread lol

but I also know many who travel with the psp..it's not a big deal at all! no one thought it was a big deal back then doubt they will now. You can easily put it anywhere you want..a bag or w/e. PSP was the same and it did just fine...people didn't find that inconvenient..at least doubt the majority did, it sold just fine.

Laptops are supposed to make things convenient too..doubt anyone will bitch about it not fitting in a pocket. same with the pads coming out now. they sell just fine. There will always be someone or the other who is not happy with things like this. you can't please everyone. But from you can see for yourself, people are fine with the screensize and the device itself. you are making too big of an issue out of nothing.

as for the phone function...sony knows this and have answered already, it's not a market they are competing with. Their priorities lie elsewhere hence the design of the product. simple as that

many people carried psp outside with them...that much I will assure you. Majority of the people won't be buying this device just to play at home.

Basically, all you're saying is that the NGP isn't for you, which is fair enough. But lots of people carry their bag around with a lot of the time, and that's what the NGP is perfect for.

the same argument can be made against tablets as well... i suppose it just depends on whether people would find these devices more entertaining and valuable than tablets

Currently, I see no reason to choose the 3DS over NGP. Of course, it all depends on how expensive the NGP will be...
