A big part of backwards compatibility is the ability to play the library that YOU ALREADY OWN on the updated system.

This isn't backwards compatibility. It's the ability to download old games.

...which are also playable on the previous system, so it still is backwards compatibility.

The VC isn't considered backwards compatibility.

You can't play VC versions on the original consoles, but you can play the PSN versions on the PSP and NGP, therefore

Nearly every single VC version is an exact copy of the original, down to not even being rescaled.

That's not what matters though. You can easily have downloaded the PSP games to play on your PSP, and those same games will now play on the NGP. That's why it's backwards compatible.

VC is not backwards compatibility because those games were removed from their rightful storage mediums in order to be played on the new consoles, but downloadable PSP games are in their rightful storage medium as they are.

Rainbird gave the perfect response.

Gah...This is really disheartening to hear I really wanted it to have UMD BC so i could buy them cheap from shops and not limited from the store, well this is pushing me towards just a PSP instead of a Vita.

It was confirmed AGES ago that NGP would have a UMD slot but use Flash based memory for games instead.

Well, Haven't played a few PSP games, so if it's like this so it's worth it :D

This is when a list of all PSP games and checkmarks as to wether they are on PSN or not would be helpful.

THats good news but I won't be rebuying my games digital.

e=mc^2

Gaming on: PS4 Pro, Switch, SNES Mini, Wii U, PC (i5-7400, GTX 1060)

Man, the NGP is just sounding better and better everyday.  Now, all Sony has to do is get the pricing right and they may just have a sales beast on their hands.

Is this really an exciting thing? I assume the greater majority of users own their games on UMD, therefore how does digital backwards compatible even help you? Won't you still have to rebuy the game?

Seems like it shouldn't be labelled as backwards compatibility but mroe of a Sony's own Virtual Console.

Yes it is backwards compatibility (though it also is ability to download old games).  It plays exact same old software through and emulator and accepts media (granted, not all media) in which the old games were made.  No updates to the software or purchase of new software needed unless you bought on UMD.

It's a harsh reality of having two different methods of distribution for the PSP (and 360 and PS3).  It's much easier to have BC through emulation only instead of emulation and ability to read older media.  In general, expect this behavior in the future.

Considering the fact that all of my games are downloaded for reasons just like this (that and I don't resell my games usually), it's fine for me.
