A first? If we're ignoring the existence of the N64 and Gamecube, yes.

As thekitchensink pointed out, you really need to look at Nintendo's history.

And graphical fidelity is a shallow reason to get exicted about a game. As in it's caring about the games based on their appearance without taking artistry or content into account.

This was the kind of attitude I hoped the Wii and DS would kill.

And the cost increase that come with those graphics will come at the cost of content, because we've already see it happen.

Most of the normal gamers are excited, honestly...

It's not because some games enjoy more crisp detail that others have to! Gee. Take the Endless Ocean video, and give it HD. You'd have to be really stubborn not to see the potential improvement. You're preaching to the choir, I've enjoyed my retro games like crazy, but I do also enjoy my HD! Metroid Prime in HD would be totally insane. That doesn't get you excited?

Nintendo is a beast, they've done cutting edge in the past. It's not because you have cutting edge that you have to have bleeding costs. There's a balance there!

The cutting edge this time is more expensive and time consuming than in the past. Development costs and times are inflated.

And player fun is often a second consideration over a developer's vision, or for just copying an established hit as it's too risky to experiment.

Basically this direction heralds more games like Other M and Heavy Rain, which are not mainstream hits, and games this expensive need the mainstream more than ever. But financial reports show the mainstream does NOT like this direction. And just because Nintendo gets involved doesn't mean the mainstream will, as they dropped Nintendo the last time they went anywhere near this direction (and I like the Gamecube, but I can see why it wasn't a hit).

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

This is not the first time Nintendo will have high fidelity graphics at all, though.

The SNES, N64, and Gamecube were very high fidelity for the time, with the former two being the most powerful of their generations and the latter pretty close.  The Wii has been the only time they lagged behind.

That said, Smash Bros in HD will be marvelous :D

Actually during the 16bit era it was the Neo Geo which was the most powerful. Also let's not forget there was a whole 2 year tech gap between the SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis (and later on in the consoles lifespan it really showed).

Darth, I'm talking about full 1080p graphics. You know what I meant. The endless ocean video looks like it could use some 1080p there, that's the kind of upgrade I mean.

1080p is extremely overhyped..

My biggest disappointment with PS3 has been the 1080p hype crap they spewed near launch etc.

HD in itself is cool though and gives a noticeable difference, if you mean HD in general I agree but for its time N64 was ahead of other systems.

I am pretty sure Nintendo will do a butt load of bucks on just the Hd remake of what they already have.

Rigth now, I just Horribly scare off the possibility of shovelware Cafe will have, Just as ubisoft said they will port alot a titlle they already made,  And I really think alot of compagnie will do the same.

I'm not resolution whore, but seeing Zelda in 1080p would be pretty damn awesome

GAHH! Endless Ocean 3 for Cafe in 1080p!
