Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 has outsold the 360 WW (from equal launch)

@Lost

The Xbox 360 has better games, its still cheaper yet IT can barely keep up with PS3.

are you crazy? sony was the big cheese with its ps2 and microsoft was nearly a joke, saleswise, with its xbox. and you're considering it a great success that next gen ps3 bearly inched by the next gen 360 in WW sales for their respective launch years?

the playing fields were never equal. for microsoft it's mission accomplished... 360 bearly keeping up...hahah silly boy

btw i looked at the graph the author of this thread if refering too. it should be set to 52 weeks not 156 weeks. when you set it to that you see ps3 is only sold 52,126 more in its launch year so wtf is all the cheering about?

The N64 sold more its first year than the PS1 did during its first year. When you have to cherry pick stats to make a consoles sales look better that usually indicates that it has underperformed.

Saying the 360 was in short supply is just a lame excuse. Like someone said, the people who wanted it still bought it for the most part. That just shows sony put up the effort to produce more systems than Microsoft because Microsoft had low expectations for themselves and didn't make enough.

Also it doesn't matter if the PS3 had price drops, the reality is it still costed more, even after both drops.

And PS3's only bundle that I know of is with the 80 gig and motorstorm, doesnt the 360 bundle one of their version with Ultimate alliance AND Forza 2?? (correct me if i'm wrong)

Also the PS2 still owns 360!!!

Not really. The launch numbers don't take into account the 360's hardware drought which was at least 6 months after launch in the U.S. With the exception of the Wii, you can't sell what's not on the shelves. And 2 weeks after launch, though Sony didn't believe it, and offered folks what $1,000 to find one on shelves - HA HA!

Yeah, the PS3 is selling better, but fact of the matter is - the PS3 has been readily available 2 weeks after launch. The 360 hasn't been readily available.

And one other thing - my friend who wanted a 60gb PS3 with BC settled for a 40gb PS3. He said he wanted a BR player and it was a PS, so why not? I'll keep you posted if he or his son actually buy games for it, because they'll have to buy games or just download demos off PSN.

What I found the funniest is - he was asking me why it was called Blu Ray in the first place.

So you think that the people who wanted a 360 during the "drought" didn't get around to buying one the whole next year? Or even the next year.

Thats funny. You're a funny person.

I wanted a 360 and called around for months (and I wasn't alone - trust me). And to Mr. Turd, folks still want a Wii and can't find one. Consider yourself fortunate if you get one - there are several on this board who want a Wii and can't find one. The PS3 being readily available vs. the 360 and Wii droughts is laughable. Yes, some folks bought a PS3 and the numbers are up, but the lack of 360s and Wiis proves one thing - while the wealth of PS3s proves something else.

It has outsold the XBOX yes. But remember that statistically the 2 sold essentially the same amount during the launch year. It also took a few tries for Sony to do so.

1 It had 2 fire sales one for the 20GB which sold for as low as 369 at the end. the other for the 60GB version at 499 and retaielrs were adding in incentives like Circuit Citiy's free controller Deal.
2. A complete change in SKUs with the 80GB coming with a Free game and being introduced at a higher price to have a "price drop" once the 60GB fire sale was out of the way.
3. The key introduction of a 40GB version and in Japan a new color that is 399 just weeks before the holiday sales. this has the effect of the tail end of the price cuts sales spiek being masked by the holiday sales.

the XBOX has had
1. a 50 dollar price cut
2. Halo 3s release.

I do expect sales of the PS3 to drop back down to 10K-20K in Japan and in the US to hover around 170K a month or so. I expect the 360 to sell better in the UK while the PS3 will still seel best in Spain and Italy.

Though the PS3 has sold better than antcipated it still has to show it can do more than sales spikes.

you forgot the $1 billion Microsoft spent to extend the warrenty on the 360 ^_^

I think it's a sign that the PS3 is doing well, it's keeping up with it's direct competition (the 360). It's not a great sign and shouldn't be blown out of proportion, but it is hopeful for the PS3 fandom none the less.

But if you really want to put it into perspective, it's only just over 50,000 units (if you set number of weeks to 52, you know, a year) and you also have to factor in the fact that the 360 launched at a time when HDTV's were a rarity AND it was up against the behemoth known as the PS2.
People were not willing to dip their feet into the next gen pool yet at that point, considering that only 1 next-gen console was on the market and it had to compete with the runaway success that was the ps2, especially since 2005 was the year of God of War, DMC3, GT 5, RE 4, Shadow of the colossus etc (the list goes on). What does this mean for the PS3 sales? not so good, considering all 3 next-gen consoles were released already, people were really taking them in now to be a long-standing thing and the PS3 only managed to clip the 360 by just over 50,000 units for first year sales, that's not saying too much considering there is no fear of next-gen consoles any more (because all 3 are here now) and HDTV are a lot more prevalent then they were 2 years ago.

On the positive side though, it can be said that the 50,000 difference is significant if you count the fact that it was the year Halo 3 was brought to it's competitor the 360. Obviously the impact of the PS2 on the 360 opening year is much more greater then the impact of the 360 on the PS3's opening year because of the absolute gems the PS2 dropped that year (2005).

So that's the two sides of the coin, I personally think 50,000 difference isn't hugely significant, but every small battle counts, and this is one that can be seen as a win by sony, depending on how you look at it.

I think ps3 was undertracked in NA, by 100k..

Haha, you've got to be kidding me right, now you're saying that vgchartz didn't include certain info into their calculations? what next, that MS owns vgchartz that's why the PS3 is only ~8 Million?

Do you have the receipts of 100,000 PS3's sold that wasn't included by vgchartz?

This is suprising to anyone on Vgchartz by now? It shouldn't be, the figures speak for themselves, and the PS3 has been out WW only since March as well, which has to be taken into account when doing these comparisons.

Here in Norway, the PS3 launched in mid-March, and it overtook 360 market share by first half of October...

360 supposedly had the best line up of '07, and is STILL cheaper than the ps3 which supposedly had the worst line up of '07. the 360 should not be in its position. the reason that i think its in its position is because, in all fairness, the 360 only has a market in america and, the mini-me of america, the UK. i mean come on, 10million of 360's are from the u.s and 1.8 are from the uk. that leaves around 4 million for the rest of the world. just shows how popular the 360 really is around the world. and even though the ps3 has only 8 million customers, its userbase is much more spread. shows how popular the ps3 really could be.

360 can still have a price cut next year, which can give them an advatage, but what makes you think sony wont introduce a price cut? componenets WILL get cheaper for sony, and even though they may not break even, i think they will still reduce a price to stay competitive, and with cheaper production costs, they may still be able to get away with it.

i really thought the 360 would nail the ps3 down this year, but it didnt and i think ms will suffer because of this.

It helps to examine the details as well. The PS3 sales is less an implicaton of it's own strength than the 360's weakness. The PS3 had a boost because of 1 or 2 (depending on your interpretation) panicked price cuts and system redesigns, while the 360 held at the same price point for over 18 months. Moreover, the 360 simply cannot get off the ground in Japan, which is a problem that will hobble Microsoft's efforts to become the industry leader.

At the moment the PS3 sappears to be more closely tracking the GameCube and XBox sales (though slightly ahead). Given where those consoles ended up this might be cause for despair, if not for the fact that the PS3 still costs more than twice as much as those consoles did and thus likely has more room to improve through future price cuts.
You conveniently forgot to mention the fact that there was no competition for the 360 for a full year. I'm sure that helped it out just a bit, especially in Japan.
