No, the reason the portable versions sell so well is the free online play.

Correct, MH3 Portable is trimmed down in features, there is no underwater combat. This goes for the PS3 version as well. There are some monsters missing as well, but also some monsters added that were not in the Wii version.

The portable versions are considered "down-ports" but seeing how Monster Hunter really shines in multiplayer, the Portable versions aren't all that inferior. The PS3 version is a quick and dirty port but with the shared save file system it's a natural fit for people who play MH on PSP or people who love MH and only own a PS3.

Am I the only one who thinks this question is delusional? All of one game has ever topped 1m in Japan on the PS3 and people expect a port to do that well? Really? I don't believe the PS3 can handle games that actually sell a decent amount. I mean, even the mighty Final Fantasy - the franchise which topped 1m for the PS3 - had pretty messed up numbers for its franchise on the console.

If MH3 game had sold under 500k on Wii, then it'd be possible, even likely, but I don't think there's any hope whatsoever of MHP3 pulling this off.

'Course, MH has been defying expectations so I suppose this is possible...
