Forums - Sony Discussion - PlayStation Franchises that will survive and die by next gen

This gen we saw a few old PlayStation franchises go MIA.

Syphon Filter, Jak and Daxter, Getaway, and a few others. The weird thing is that they all did fairly well in the sales department, yet Sony (or their devs) decided to go in new directions.

We also saw an introduction of a lot of fresh new franchises like Uncharted, Resistance, InFamous, etc.

What do you think will make it into next gen and what franchises will die out? My Predictions below

Survivors........

Uncharted - Naughty Dog will break their trend of starting a new IP every gen and will continue Uncharted. It's far too popular and lucrative to leave behind. Even if ND doesnt want to do it, Sony will make sure Nathan Drake lives on. With over 8 million copies sold so far, and another 5 million or so with U3 coming out, this series has earned Sony alot of money and gave them their first true Killer App. Nathan Drakes almost reached icon status for PS3, theres no way he wont be on the PS4.

InFamous - I expect the sequel to sell really well. They are onto something with this series. It will continue to evolve.

Gran Turismo - Polyphonys baby is a PS staple. Lets just hope it doesnt take them so long to deliver it next gen.

Twisted Metal - Atleast one per generation... right? right? Well it could depend on the new games success

God of War - much like Uncharted, its too lucrative and popular to die off. They will continue making GOW games as long as there is demand for them. Kratos is another character that has achieved almost Icon status for PS.

WarHawk/StarHawk - i think the best has yet to come for this series, StarHawk looks like the beginning of something new and exciting for this game. Emmit Graves has future Sony mascot/icon written all over him.

MLB The Show - sport games never seem to die out.

Socom - maybe i'm crazy, but what else will Zipper work on?

Say Goodbye to........

LittleBigPlanet - One hit wonder. The sequel was an utter failure and their isnt much room to grow. MediaMolecule is a young developer and will move on to something new.

Motorstorm - the latest one is a mega sales bust. 2 barely reached a million, and the first one only looks like it has good sales because it was bundled for so long.

Killzone - maybe just wishful thinking on my part, but Guerilla is capable of so much more. With FPS being over saturated and KZ sales peaking at only 2.5million-ish, I think its time to move on. They already stated they are developing a new IP. Hopefully a TPS instead of FPS this time around. KZ universe and story is just so uninspired and bland. They need to leave it in the past and start something new. They certainly have the engine for it.

MAG - unoriginal, bland, boring, generic, clustered. The name may live on in a sequel, but I garauntee the 256 player battle MAG as we know it will die out. They might make it more Battlefield-ish but this series will need a huge revamp. I have a feel Zipper will see a huge shake up after 2 flops. Theyre a huge developer (150 people) yet theyve released two games that lack quality and seem like they were made by a start-up developer team.

Unknown......

Resistance and Ratchet & Clank - with Insomniac going 3rd party and Sony owning the IPs, there future are unknown and too hard to predict.

Around the Network

I very much doubt Killzone will be going away. The story isn't finished and their is a dedicated fanbase. They just need to stop launching it in Feb-March. >< That was LBP2s problem as well because it was leagues better than the first in quality.

Sounds about right. But I think Killzone will stick around, and I would only add:

Wise fwom your gwave

Wild Arms - They will make a new one for NGP. I have to believe that!

Firstly, fantastic thread/idea

I agree that Uncharted will survive along with MLB, God of War. Gran Turismo IS Playstation so not a chance that it will ever stop. Yakuza will also live on as it is a big seller in Japan. I feel that Valkyria Chronicles may live on if they make another PS3 Sequel. White Knight Chronicles may live on

Relating to the ones that will die however I might have to disgagree. If Infamous 2 does not exceed 2.5M lifetime without bundling then I feel that a New IP will developed in it's place. Resistance will die without a doubt if the third fails to exceed 3M (IMO). I feel that Warhawk & Starhawk will not continue either. Little Big Planet is a tough one as it is really well recieved and Sackboy has become a SOny mascot himself. Rather than a standlone game they may incorporate Sackboy into other Sony IPs (Along the lines of PS Move Heroes which is horrendous). I feel that Ratchet & CLank can always have a new release and sell 2M but given the trend from PS1 to PS2 and PS2 to PS3 perhaps the series had it's last horrah (I anticipate All 4 One bombing HARD). Lair will never have a sequel. Motorstorm will also stop. Twisted Metal will be entirely contigent upon the release later this year. Heavy Rain MAY have a sequel but that may be it; they have obtained higher than expected sales and the first was geenrally well recieved. Killzone is a tough one to comment on; I feel that as long as they get 2.5M sales then the series will continue. Heavenly Sword after the sequel will die out. MAG is toast but did better than expected. Haze is toast, Eyepet, Modnation Racers.

The good news is many new IPs will come out to replace this gens new IPs

I was with you until you got to LBP, there's obviously gonna be an LBP3D!! ¬_¬

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

MM already said they wouldnt make a new LBP after the first one, but then they came up with the idea to have a "create your own game" so they made LBP2.

They should also hit XMas if they plan on ever making any type of platformer.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

No one said anything about them releasing this year.

I'm saying in general, platformers (and all kiddy games *ahem ModNationRacers*) should be released right before the Holidays.

LittleBigPlanet will survive, and so will ModNation Racers. The latter will definitely continue.

Ratchet & Clank will continue, of course, even if developed by somebody other than Insomniac.

NOW, SOME OTHER FRANCHISES YOU DIDN'T LIST :

Valkyria Chronicles will continue. I like to believe that.

Demon's Souls will eventually get a sequel, probably this gen, but hopefully it'll do well enough to earn a pass for the PS4.

WipEout will definitely continue, and probably it will see a full-fledged $60 game in the next-gen.

Sly Cooper will get a sequel, and I'm more inclined to bet it will be for the next gen. Even if it gets a sequel this gen, it will continue in the next one.

Hot Shots Golf will make a return for the next gen. That's almost guaranteed. Motion 3D for that one and it'll be something.

Yakuza. Well, it's Sega and it sells in Japan at least.

Sports Champions. It's obvious Sony will continue to push for the casual market, and a sequel for this one is a no-brainer.

Yakuza and Vakyria aren't really playstation franchises.

OT: I'm with you for the most part but i'm not sure about Killzone. Everything else I agree with.
