Forums - Gaming Discussion - Story : How the Wii got the status of the PS2, or more than that.

Great story Neos.
Two friends of my mother has gotten a Wii after they played over at our house. They are both 45+ and have kids. And when they've put the kids to sleep they stay up and play :)

Predictions for December 31st 2008:
Wii 38,000,000
DS 84,500,000
PS3 17,000,000
PSP 41,000,000
X360 23,000,000

Wii needs more new IP. Other than Wii sport and Wii fit, I cannot think of any NEW exciting IP for Wii from Nintendo (Wii music and Wii chess.... maybe). I believe Nintendo must have something else under development, hopefully not just for casual games.

I won't be surprised if Animal Crossing Wii, Mario Kart Wii, SSBB become hugely successful WW. But Wii needs more than that to last long enough to sell over 100 million. Hopefully the third party developers will come up something new to catch some love from Nintendo fans. But so far, no luck for them.

Or, we just wait until Nintendo launches their "next gen" console in 3 years, and then the whole routine will start over again: Mario Party 9, Super Mario XXX, Mario Kart XXX (joking).

It (PS3's market share) might hit 30%, but definently not more. ~ Neo

The software is coming. Since the Wii is the leading platform now, developers are going to take advantage of the userbase.

I have a lot of gamer friends and none of them owns a Wii. On the other hand I have a lot of non-gamer friends and they all think the Wii is fun and either have on or want one.

I don't understand the Wii phenomena at all. The iPod is kind of an easy one since everyone likes music but the Wii is a gaming device and I'm not sure what people that don't like games are doing with them. Didn't they use to hate games? Most of them made fun of me for playing games at age of 35+ WTF :(

I wonder, are they really playing games besides Wii Sports and the like? Even if they are, for how long will they play the Wii before it rots next to the TV set?

From reading Neos's story I see that in Holland (I love your country Neos, worked in Delft for 2 years), just like in the USA (at least around me), most Wiis are being bought by people who don't like games but think the Wii is cool.

Just yesterday I met a friend that I didn't see for a couple of years. He was never a gamer, he is a musician and play his Cello 4-5 hours a day, he has no time for games at all. I was pretty impressed when he told me that he got a Wii last year (Christmas). I asked him what was he playing and he tells me he his still playing Zelda (he got it with the Wii over a year ago). I told him to go buy SMG and RE4.

what are you saying you can't understand why people want to have fun with other people while at the same time being "In" being considered cool.

Anyways on the topic your saying kids in Holland  who are bored go outside and do nothing. This doesn't sound like phenomenon to me.  jk sort of

 I didn't say it was a good phenomenon right

I love how the Sony fanboys like the delusional shitsman over here try to somehow undermine the Wii by calling it a "toy" rather than a gaming console or pointing to the casual gamers for the sucess of the Wii (hey sonyboys, just what do you think the primary userbase of PS2 was??) You can try to doge the importance and success of Wii all you want fanboys, but the fact is that Wii is a legitimate GAMING console with legitimate GAMERS as its users, and it's currently dominating its "hardcore" competitors.

I'm not going to sit here and try to predict how successful it'll be compared to the PS2, although it's looking like it's set to be just as successful or moreso than PS2. But to try and undermine and invalidate its enourmous success by shrugging it off as a "toy" is utterly REDICULOUS and pure fanboyism. The fact is that Sony fanboys are pissed that Nintendo has finally found a way to dethrone their precious Playstation brand, and they just can't handle it, so they try to kid themselves and others by claiming the Wii is somehow not a legitimate gaming console and that only casuals are carrying it to success. If that really helps you guys sleep at night, so be it, but you know as well as I do that this logic is just foolish and untrue.

"""@libellule

If I follow your logic correctly, someone who bought a PS2 to play sports games and bought a GT or GTA game, is a core gamer. But someone who bought a Wii for Wii Sports and bought Zelda or Super Mario is still a casual gamer. """

==>yes, it is something like this

but
the problem is not about core gamer or casual
the problem is about WHO buy a console during the first year ?
who is driving the sales of the Wii ?

PSX/PS2/Xbox/Xbox360/PS3/GC/N64 (u can add every console)
==> hardcore gamer

Wii
==> casual

and do you know WHY ?

because the main target of the Wii is the casual market : Wiisport/Wiifit
During the first year of the PSX/PS2, the userbase was 100% hardcore.
And later it was diluted by core and casual gamer.

The game that made the success of the PSX/PS2
==> hardcore game

The game that are making the success of the Wii
==> casual game

Wii is not a PS2, it is a Wii
Even if it sell 1 000 000 000 WW, it will not be a PS2.

Of course, if the third party developper begin to make good game on Wii or begin to adapt Streetfighter/GTA/CoD (etc...) to the Wii
THEN
it will be the ultimate console as the PS2 was.

If this not happen, then people will buy another console to "complete" the Wii
the PS3 or the Xbox360

(Mario is not casual, it is casual and hardcore
but my point is that casual dont buy a Wii to play Mario, they buy a wii to play Wiisport and Wiifit later)
(SMG is not driving the Wii sales, but SMG sales are driven by the Wii storm)

 Who cares? The hardcore gamers like you? Well, if that thought lets you sleep at night...

"My current console will loose, but my older console will always be better than the console that beat my current one! Yes!"

Ah well now that explains why the rankings top 50 on this site is nintendo only. Yes i heard this site is invaded by the nintendo legion

**First of all: what the hell kind of name is shitsman?

Second: I'm 18 years old. I love the Wii more than any of the other two, though I own and play all of them. Most of my friends who are my age also own a Wii. I bet more than half the people on this forum have a Wii, and I guarantee here no one is a child or a grandparent. Therefore, you fail.**

Thats because its cheap as fuck. Every hobo can buy it. Right now Wii sells so good because peope actually think it has good games and is cheap REALLY CHEAP. Once ps3 and the AC get down to 250$.................what then? Who will buy a wii over a ps3 or tresixty then ay LOL?

Face it N drones, every mommy wants to buy their kid a ps3 or 360, its JUST TOOO EXPENSIVE ATM
