I have a lot of gamer friends and none of them owns a Wii. On the other hand I have a lot of non-gamer friends and they all think the Wii is fun and either have on or want one.

I don't understand the Wii phenomena at all. The iPod is kind of an easy one since everyone likes music but the Wii is a gaming device and I'm not sure what people that don't like games are doing with them. Didn't they use to hate games? Most of them made fun of me for playing games at age of 35+ WTF :(

I wonder, are they really playing games besides Wii Sports and the like? Even if they are, for how long will they play the Wii before it rots next to the TV set?

From reading Neos's story I see that in Holland (I love your country Neos, worked in Delft for 2 years), just like in the USA (at least around me), most Wiis are being bought by people who don't like games but think the Wii is cool.

Just yesterday I met a friend that I didn't see for a couple of years. He was never a gamer, he is a musician and play his Cello 4-5 hours a day, he has no time for games at all. I was pretty impressed when he told me that he got a Wii last year (Christmas). I asked him what was he playing and he tells me he his still playing Zelda (he got it with the Wii over a year ago). I told him to go buy SMG and RE4.

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

"""I could be totally wrong, but:

Nintendo has more games than just Wii Fit.
"""

==> you are totally right
but I saied "E32007"
they have created their "E3 buzz" because of Wiifit that succeed to reach the mass media

Without WiiFit in Japan :

Wii hardware on Japan : 100k for Xmas
and SMG sales a lot lower

I know there are others GREAT games like SMG/Zelda
but they mainly attract the Nintendo fan
The casual will buy the game just because it is on the Wii, not because this is the 2nd best game of all time accoring to review.

Time to Work !

I have also know a girl that has a Wii but know NOTHING to video game
and another friend that is a nintendo fan.

Wii user : Nintendo fan + casual + very casual (mom/dad/adult)

@libellule

If I follow your logic correctly, someone who bought a PS2 to play sports games and bought a GT or GTA game, is a core gamer. But someone who bought a Wii for Wii Sports and bought Zelda or Super Mario is still a casual gamer.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.

Great story Neos.
Two friends of my mother has gotten a Wii after they played over at our house. They are both 45+ and have kids. And when they've put the kids to sleep they stay up and play :)

Predictions for December 31st 2008:
Wii 38,000,000
DS 84,500,000
PS3 17,000,000
PSP 41,000,000
X360 23,000,000

Wii needs more new IP. Other than Wii sport and Wii fit, I cannot think of any NEW exciting IP for Wii from Nintendo (Wii music and Wii chess.... maybe). I believe Nintendo must have something else under development, hopefully not just for casual games.

I won't be surprised if Animal Crossing Wii, Mario Kart Wii, SSBB become hugely successful WW. But Wii needs more than that to last long enough to sell over 100 million. Hopefully the third party developers will come up something new to catch some love from Nintendo fans. But so far, no luck for them.

Or, we just wait until Nintendo launches their "next gen" console in 3 years, and then the whole routine will start over again: Mario Party 9, Super Mario XXX, Mario Kart XXX (joking).

The software is coming. Since the Wii is the leading platform now, developers are going to take advantage of the userbase.

what are you saying you can't understand why people want to have fun with other people while at the same time being "In" being considered cool.

Anyways on the topic your saying kids in Holland  who are bored go outside and do nothing. This doesn't sound like phenomenon to me.  jk sort of
