Forums - Gaming Discussion - Story : How the Wii got the status of the PS2, or more than that.

Note : Long story, only reply if you have read the whole thing, stay on topic and respect my slightly biased opinion. Ignore spelling mistakes and all that. Thank you in advance.

So yea it was Christmas. Nowadays it's more of a commercial thing rather than the religious thing it was before. Christmas however still brings people together like it always did. To not go more off-topic on this i'll now start a wonderful thing that has happened to me.

Monday night or tuesday morning all the kids and teenagers get their presents. Mine were all not related to gaming because i still have enough games to still play (or re-play : Windwaker - OOT, phantasy star online) (PC games like TF2/UT3). Anyways, 2 of my ex-girfriends who i still have contact with messaged me on MSN that they've gotten a Wii with galaxy. I was astonished, not because they got a Wii, but because they got a gaming machine. They both were never into gaming and as soon as they came to my house (back then) the PC game or the console needed to be turned off because they didn't like it, it was for dorks and it made me look geeky (I accepted their opinion ofcourse). So now they both got a Wii (hypocrism at its best eh?).

I asked them why their parents bought them the console. They both had a slightly different answer, but in a nutshell they actually said the same. They said it was pure fun and something one has to have in their home. It's like the next big thing next to a TV and a dvd player. They both realised they would probably never be bored again, and don't need to go out to actually have fun (think of the movies/playing pool). Apperently kids get bored nowadays, so they need something to fill their gap. Here in holland we have this phenomenon called 'Hangjongeren' or roughly translated 'Hangkids', teens that are just bored and go hang out on the streets, practicly doing nothing. So it seems what was once called geeky, or things that only geeks play, is now becoming a standard, much like the ps2 was, maybe even more.

Monday evening i needed to work (voluntarily) at the mall where i'm employed. Usually after work instead of going home we go and drink free booze which we just take from our stock (who doesn't want free booze). The managers were also drinking along and sitting at the table. One started the conversation about if the 50 euro he spended on a used ps2 was a good deal. As nintendo fan as i am, ofcourse i immediately jumped in the conversation and asked why he bought a ps2 (for apperently his little son). he replied with things like, ah well its cheap and they all like playstation right. I agreed, the playstation brand is (was) a cultural phenomenon and pretty much everyone knows about it and have played it. I didn't really want to let him regret his purchase so i didn't say anything after that.

The other manager then jumped in and said he bought a Wii for his two boys. I applauded (well not litterly) his purchase and said he made the right choice. He then wondered if i had a Wii too. I said ofcourse, everyone should (mouth to mouth word ftw), and then i talked about all the advantages it has, how it brings people together and eliminates all the prejudices people had about gaming. After that the other people jumped in aswell and said they might be buying a Wii next year aswell. But most of them added some If's behind it. Like, only if the machine stays popular (some casual apperently also think it might be a fad), only if more of these games come out, only if its out in this color, etc etc. But they all made the plans to make a future purchase. I was thrilled with joy to hear all their talking about it, nothing pleases me more than people talking about nintendo, how the starter and reviver of videogames takes back control over what was once theirs.

A fad? only in fanboys dreams.
This year people all got to experience it and got to know it. Next year is when it all happens, like it should. Fame is temporary, Sony feels that now aswell. But legends never die. The king's back baby!

/end of slightly fanboyish story.

NOTHING TO THANK ME XD
AT THIS POINT OF TIME THE UNWRITTEN RULES OF THE VIDEOGAME MARKET SEEM FITTING
1.THE CONSOLE WITH THE MOST POWER DOESN'T WIN
2.THE ONE WITH THE BRIGHTEST COLOUR WINS(EXCEPT PS2 & JAPANESE PCENGINE {I HOPE THAT I HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN ANYTHING })
DON'T TAKE THESE 'RULES' TOO SERIOUS :)

Indeed, many people are jumping on it that you wouldn't expect yet.

I haven't seen that happen much in the U.S. thanks to our slightly different market/culture, but I know it'll continue to pick up. I mean, the Wii is <2m behind the 360 in America now.

@Mummelmann Your predictions for 08 are quite conservative for all systems(except PSP),imo.

So, the Wii is far from being a fad, because demand is creating more demand.
