I'd think next year would the true PS3 slim release,  I'm not totally sure what this model has that differentiates itself from the other PS3's, but its probably just got a bigger hard drive, I don't see Sony adding anythng special

but people on IGN have suggested it could have added RAM (like how to PSP got more RAM) or how some conponents could just have changed manufacturer

I don't know what it will have, but in order for them to cut the price to $200 they will have either stripped out some features or be taking a ~$50 loss per machine.

well, apparently, it still has wifi and a hard drive. I can't see what else they would remove as far as features are concerned. Maybe no USB? But then no way to charge the controllers. Who knows, really.

No USB? How the hell am I suppose to connect my PS Eye for Move??

But yeah, they must remove something as you said to get the price down $100.

This is going away from the topic but the PS3 is 5yr old tech, it should cost $200 anyway..or it would if it was a PC..but it isn't I suppose.
I don't know why console depreciation is so much slower than a PC's when basically there are the same thing, plastic and chips apart from there isn't a newer console every month...maybe that's it.

Well, I guess that's out of the question then. I didn't know it used the USB. I was figuring that they'd remove it because you can charge them on a computer, but I guess there's other scenarios that I haven't thought of.

@marcus

Well, they said that the slim isn't really the slim, but really just a lighter version. I mean, looking at the ps2, or the PSOne, the size are blatantly different than their predescesors. They might go the same route and go with TGS, and for this year at e3 just talk about the NGP.

A $200 PS3 isn't out of the question, but not a whole lot beyond speculation as to whether this will happen this year. No Chinese factory spy shots (confirmed the last time) etc. It doesn't seem likely without another complete redesign to cut manufacturing costs though.

Maybe wait until E3.

Otherwise, shop around for a deal on the current model.

$200 is all that SONY need to succeed I think.

The PS3 has failed to sell simply because of the high price, everybody knows that a cheap console will sell like hot cakes.

With the tonnes of great games coming out on PS3 this year, that price-cut would launch PS3 sales through the roof. If SONY manage to keep the momentum going with more great titles they could kill of the XBOX 360 early, and when this generation ends, PS3 sales could be fairly close to the Wii's.

Let's hope that during the PSN downtime, SONY make the PSN even better and bring out impressive firmware updates.

If SONY just tried a little harder, they could re-capture the glory days they had with the PS1 and the PS2.

Production cost might have become cheaper.

That's why I said only a $50 loss instead of $70 or more.

the older the hardware gets, the quicker the drop in cost of manufacturing.

wifi b/g, usb 2.0, HDMI 1.3, HDD... pretty much everything in the ps3 is dirt cheap now since theres improved versions of all those bits of hardware.

sony played a role in the creation of the cell and blu-ray so they must be getting massive discounts on those too.

I think they will atleast be breaking even the price drop, it would be stupid of them to start selling at a loss again when there is no need to since sales are good in comparison to other systems.

It would be great if the system with the larger HDD comes with wireless N.

False. The older the hardware gets, the SLOWER the drop in manufacturing costs.  That's why it went from $800 to manufacture to just $400 in like 2 years, and then only dropped by $100 over the next 2 years.  Also, as new components come out to replace older ones, the older ones actually go UP in manufacturing cost because are produced less and emphasis is given to sell the newer hardware.

I really don't know what they could be doing differently with the new model. Guess we will have to wait and see.

PS3 slim was not announced at E3.

so i guess M$ must be hurrying making new Xbox360 SKUs now... xP

not really... USB 2.0 is still mass produced and is dirt cheap and theres not much emphasis on usb 3.0.

things like blu-ray held their price for a long time but then they fell rapidly. the initial drop might have been the biggest one but the smaller drops after that happened at a faster rate.

Instead of cutting $100 they could cut just $50 and start bundling Move with every PS3.

$200 PS3 ... just imagine the sales. Although I doubt a price cut will be announced at E3.
