Forums - Gaming Discussion - Besides optimization to a platform, why care about exclusivity?

^^^^^^"Got a problem that a certain game isn't on your system?  Suck it up and look for what makes your system a great purchase.  Sad that you can't have Crackdown?  Grow a pair and buy Infamous.  Whiney because you can't get the "regular" Dead Space?  Shut the hell up and get Dead Space Extraction and enjoy it for what it is (and it's a cool game).  Pissed your pants from sadness that you can't play Heavy Rain on your Xbox360?  Stop being a pussy and get Alan Wake."

hahahahaha!!! i love it i might not agree with everything you said but this is the best paragraph i have read in a while

Agreed!  That was a manly post!  I bet he drives a Ferd F-Teen Thousand:

Because if I'm playing a game that my opponents can't play, it makes me feel good. Just thinking about them wishing they could play the game, rather than look at videos of it on youtube, makes playing the game even more satisfying.

@brendude  2. im with you some people let their bias for a company limit them to what games they could play, well there lost

3 i can see your point but im glad that EA released it on PS3, i dont have 360 i and dont want to spent hundreds on a console for just one damn game. I dont care about the other MS exclusives to be honest. And my PC is too garbage to run that version, i would have updated eventually. Hell i would argue it should never have been exclusive in the first place

4. Honestly, no i dont think so, unless that company wants to money hat the game

2. I know what you mean, I follow the games, I don't wait for them to come to the system.

3. Hmm that's true, but ME2 on the PS3 still didn't sell very well, it was still worth it because it was a year late port. As long as the games are developed simultaneously and there are no delays, ME3 fans on both consoles should be happy. And I don't care about MS's other exclusives either, Gears of War is fun in co-op mode, Alan Wake looks interesting and I get to play Tales of Vesperia in English, but other than that, there is nothing :/. I got my XBOX 360 cheap though, it doesn't matter.

4. Yeah that's true.

Because each console maker has a certain belief about how to further the industry and have their own views on how to do it.  As a gamer, you may agree with one more than any other.  Hence, you may want them to be the most successful.  That's where exclusives come in.  For me, that's Sony.

Thred right here people

I would also like to add that a multiplat is waisitng resources on porting to another console. That money could have been spend in adding extra content to the game. I think nearly every game being multiplat is a huge reason why the single player campaigns are so short compared to previous gens.

Nobody's perfect. I aint nobody!!!

The Xbox360 appeals mostly to hardcore gamers and Western-focused gamers.

The PS3 appeals mostly to Japanese-focused games, and people who just gotta have the HD movies.

The Wii appeals mostly to family types, and those looking for something fun to play in a group setting at home that isn't as intensive as, say, Gears of War or Halo or Killzone.

I agree about the Wii, but not about the PS3 or the XBOX 360.

It is a common misconception that the XBOX 360 is a "hardcore" console, but I think it is almost as casual as the Wii. Violence and gore doesn't mean it's a hardcore game, the vast majority of the XBOX 360 exclusives and top sellers are shooters, which are casual games. For a lot of people, the XBOX 360 is their first console that they own or bought for themselves. In my class, there is a clear divide between gamers. My friends are hardcore gamers and they own plenty of consoles such as the Dreamcast etc, and they all went for the PS3. The people in my class who aren't REALLY into gaming, they just pick up a shooter every now and then, they own XBOX 360's.

The problem is, because I own both consoles, I'm not really accepted by either side.

Anyway, onto the PS3. That is true that a lot of the games are Japanese-focused (which is a very good thing for me), but I would also say the PS3 is about variety. With the PS3, there is something for everyone, which is why the PS1 and PS2 were so successful, problem was, from 2006 - 2008 there was NOTHING for everyone, hence the reason why the Wii took off. I do like to play a nice variety of games, but the main reason I own the PS3 is for those blockbuster games, the games that are masterpieces and hailed as some of the greatest games of all time. As soon as MGS4 released I knew I had to get a PS3, it was totally worth it.

For the Wii, I would say it's for families, but I would also say it's for hardcore gamers aswell. The reason why I love the Wii so much is it's simple, none of this online account and trophies crap, it's just pure gaming. Simple, cheap and fun. Backwards compatibility with the Gamecube is a huge incentive to buy it aswell.

Exclusives devs tend to care more about making a good game where multiplat devs tend to care more about hitting mass appeal, Demon's souls for example, no multiplat dev would ever make a game like that or rather a new IP like that, thats another thing new IPs exclusives often have more new IPs where third party devs just milk a franchise that's popular

Thanks for noticing that I ended the thread on the first page    It's really not that difficult.  1 internetz for you lol

i don't care realy

i need a reason to own the console, and exclusives peek some gamers interrest like mine for instance, but on that same note just because the platform has the games i want doesn't mean i'll by it, but it has been that way for 2 gens now.

why do people need to reassure themselves that they made the "right" choice?? In the age of  insta-information one should be able to make a educated decesion on whay console they get without worrying about what the competition has and doesnt

No one really goes through the painstaking effort to thoroughly do research before they buy though. Even if you go youtube playthrough footage of every single game that looks good, sometimes you can't truly get a feel for whether you'd enjoy the game or not until you're actually playing it yourself. And using Metacritic as a "shortcut" is not a good idea. At least in my experience. I know I got a PS3 because everyone kept hyping it up on here as having all these must-play exclusives and the exclusives got good metacritic ratings. When I actually sat down and played them, I was unimpressed. I love Heavy Rain though (I wish that was the very first PS3 game I played, not God of War III). One of my favorite games of 2010. But yeah I really feel like it wasn't that worth it to own both a Xbox 360 and a PS3 (I'm probably not going to do that next gen. But who knows). They are too similar to each other and while being able to play on PSN with PSN friends and XBL with XBL friends is nice the appeal of online gaming didn't really stick. I haven't played online in like 3 months. Honestly I think the Wii is more my style than anything (as far as home consoles go. DS is my favorite system period). Maybe it's because I'm one of those old-school "lapsed gamers" that Malstrom talks about (I certainly don't agree with everything he says though). I pretty much went on hiatus from console gaming in the 6th Gen. I certainly enjoyed a number of HD games but I find that I don't tend to enjoy a lot of the same HD games (especially the AAA blockbusters) that people on these gaming forums do. So when I go check these games out (luckily I have a rental subscription so I don't lose much for trying), I run into dissapointments. Call me crazy but I think NSMB is more fun than Halo or God of War.
