Forums - Nintendo Discussion - I think the 3DS controls can fix all the control issues of Metroid Other M

I've been officially discouraged and will play this game with zero expectations

Which ones did you like?

At the risk of adding spoilers:  The Queen Metroid and Phantoon were my favorites.  I believe there was at least one more that I liked, but I don't remember.  I found the Ridley fight to be uninteresting.  After so many excellent battles with him in the Prime trilogy, there wasn't much they could do to top them.

That construction/heavy machine equipment battle was the worst one.  Ridiculous battle.  Big machine like a freakin loader dombined with a bulldozer, but it moved like lightning and could turn on a dime.  Fucking obnoxious battle sequence.

But the Metroid fanboy in me was just giddy as hell when the Queen and Phantoon entered the fray.  I only wish the rest of the damn game lived up to the joy of those two battles.

I think the Phantoon battle was my favorite too.  Even if it was just 5 or 10 minutes of spamming the Sense Move and charged shots.

I'm guessing you didn't play hard mode, correct?

No, I shut it off, fuming with rage, and never played it again.  I almost didn't play it after finishing the main story.  But I forced myself to see if there was any redeeming value after the main part was finished.

But then, I rarely play through a game more than once these days.  There's just so much to play and I want to experience as much of it as possible.  It's shameful how many games I haven't finished.  I only finished two recently--Steel Diver and Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Other M didn't have control issues.  On the contrary, it pioneeered a new type of gameplay that has been years in the making.

You can claim they needed more buttons or using missiles with the motion controls was a bad move.  But you can't really claim the game itself has bad controls when no other game has done what Other M did.  I still contend the gameplay of the game itself was sound.  They could have made a few tweaks here and there, but it wouldn't have changed much.  And the 3DS wouldn't be able to 'improve' a game that was specifically made around a unique game engine and the WiiMote.

They just need to throw out the baby with the bath water and make a whole new Metroid with a whole new game engine.  Because everyone seems to hate every single thing about Other M and won't accept what it actually did well.

Note: As usual I'm sure my views will be controversial because I don't hate every single aspect of Other M with a passion.  For this reason, I'm probably not going to respond again in this thread to save people abouther 10 pages of 'Other M did everything wrong and anyone who disagrees is an idiot' thread.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

having a similar opinion of the game as Kenryoku_Maxis up there, I'd appreciate it if you posted your own impressions after finishing the game. I'm curious to know how you feel all the different opinions in this thread measure up to your own..

thanks!

@Gumby, when I do beat it, should I PM you, post in this thread(which will be dead by then) or start a new thread? There's a big chance I'll buy the game next week but then I don't take my wii to school so I'll only have a week to play it. So I might not get to beat it till October when I get back from school.

LOL if you do end up only finishing it in October I think it's best to post in a new thread. You can also PM me if you're worried about being flamed . If you buy the game next week even some first impressions would be appreciated.

All they needed to do was give a wiimote plus nunchuk option. It would have been perfect like that. As is, its a 85.. with wiimote/nunchuk its 95.

^^ I don't know about the score but I agree, it certainly would've been much more comfortable with that control scheme. Maybe even let the game have some extra features/game mechanics or something

Even before the game's release people thought the sideways wiimote controls were an awful idea :( - - - - - - I remember reading that the lead designer dude (i don't know his name) insisted on it, Team Ninja tried to change his mind XD

Needless to say, I didn't really like Other M that much... I'll just pretend it never happened :p (lol Rol)

It has been a few days, so I don't really remember why I asked you that question.  I think it went back to what we were talking about with switching to first person mode.  On hard mode, it is impossible charge up a super missle in first person mode because you are stuck standing still for so long.  You have to charge up in third person mode, switch to first person mode, and then quickly release the super missile.  The game forces you to get good at facing the right way and then quickly locating your target.
