Forums - Sales Discussion - I don't understand.. why is the PS3 on top now?

Japan.  The Wii is on decline, and due for the next home console, and the Wii is usually a holiday console.  The Playstation brand is stronger in Europe, while the 360 brand is stronger in North America.  The difference is Japan, where the XBox brand is irrelevant.  It isn't like the PS3 is blowing away everyone else.  It is just marginally leading now.  Top off that the 360 is weak on exclusives and that online play isn't as large for most poeple as people here would think.

Because it came after the highest selling console of all time and because Sony has excellent logistics especially in 2nd/3rd world markets where Microsoft/Nintendo barely have the same presence. You have to remember that the PS2 has sold 36 million since the PS3 was out in addition to another 120 million before the release of the PS3.

This. PS2 was marketed and sold in more markets. People will tend to buy products they are familiar with, and Sony was able to get a foot hold in these markets with the PS2. Very good move by them. Xbox was discontinued, due to problems with Nvidia, so MS was never able to provide a cheap gaming console in these emerging markets.

Maybe.

But remember Xbox 360 and Wii were launched almost two years before PS2 here in Brazil... PS3 was launched six months after PS2.

Sony was the last to arrive here and officially sold more.

What are the numbers in Brazil? I do not know them, but I'm pretty sure cost had a lot to do with it.  I know the console prices are pretty high in comparsion to most countries, and that the PS2 was priced a lot cheaper than the 360.

i guess my work is done! for past 3 years of my input and arguing and emailing the publishers titans EA, Ubisoft, and last the mighty SEGA i tired to convince the PS3 has more raw power than 360 while the 360 power comes only the GPU but the cpu is a big joke since apple abandon PowerPC for Intel Core technology.

The big 3 in order of the power of system selling exclusives has always been:

1. Nintendo.

2. Microsoft.

3. Sony.

In this current generation.

If a game doesn't sell, it doesn't move systems and Sony simply hasn't released that many games which have come out and outright sold systems. The only significant game they did release was known about since the start of the generation, GT5. Anyone who says that the exclusives released by Sony has lead to some kind of manifest destiny is pretty much deluding themselves. It has always been the brand and the expectations around the brand which has made the PS3 perform as well as it has. If the 'Playmaker 1' had been released in 2006 for $599 it would have sold fewer than 10M consoles.

Tease.

2011-2012 will be the year of sony when times is tuff for a company from a recession, microsoft kinect, wii, and psn, and loyal microsoft americans so the questions is who said that psn become offline it will doom sony since ps1 and ps2 didn't have psn that time it easy wipe SEGA Dreamcast and Nintendo Gamecube and not a challenge of the first Xbox if history have told us that everything will repeat itself, so what Nintendo is in a dying market while sony is battle them all out in the past by defeat all odds from every disaster they will survive so ps4 will become the next reapeat of ps2 launch as GUARANTEED SUCCESS AGAIN, thanks to all that when sony is still in contract with NVIDIA with access the latest GPGPU'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so the questions is can microsoft survive another outtage of RRoD on there xbox live server when hackers have opportunity to hack the slim 360 once more with help by microsoft backfire USB support console again?  the power is now with a small usb hub !

Simple, Exclusives!

Hmmmm, I have a theory...

I just noticed that someone on here posted a topic about their PS3 dying - that makes three that I hear about in the past week - 2 from real life friends and one on here - maybe a lot of them have reached their expiration dates and people have been needing to replace their systems...

<FYI, I'm not actually serious - i don't actually believe that they have an expiration date>

How can you assume he's hardly running at all?

You can't. It's all subjective really. At best, you could gather the speeds of running of all humans over history, understand the situation and circumstances, research if and how much of an effect evolution has had on human running speeds, see if human running speeds are adequate by other beings' standards, somehow objectively adjust for all these differences in the equation and come up with averages to compare his running speed to...

But who on earth is gonna do all that?

I will check more news here... the lasted I read said PS3 700k, Wii 600k and 360 350k.

Yes PS2 is priced a lot cheaper than Wii and 360 but expensive for the market (the black market sell the PS2 for less than $250... the official one cost over $400).

The Wii and 360 had launched here for over $1500 like PS3 two year after... today the official PS3 costs a little less than $1000 (after a price cut last week).
