Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Metroid: Other M - The Black Sheep....or so we thought

Now, I want to make one thing perfectly clear.  This is NOT another typical 'Other M sucks' thread.  This is a discussion of its sales and future projection of how it will do.

Now that we've got that out of the way, I'd like to point out something.  As of today, May 01, 2011, the sales for Metroid Other M based on VGChartz predictions are as follows:

Americas - 0.52 Japan - 0.13 Europe - 0.16

This comes out to be 810,000 units sold worldwide.  And while you may not consider that a lot...consider that when the game came out, people were predicting it was a failure selling just 400,000 units.  If the current sales show anything, its that this game does indeed have legs, selling twice as much as its first months sales, and still rising steadily.

Also consider every Metroid game, besides the original NES Metroid and Metroid Prime, have all sold between 500,000-1.5 million units.  Considering Other M is already at the halfway mark, its not hard to think Other M could still turn out to sell between 1-1.5 million in its lifetime like the rest of the main series Metroid games.

Surely people can put their differences aside and see that Metroid has a pretty solid fanbase to provide such sales.  And this is taking into account that many of those staunch Metroid fans didn't buy this game because of all the negative hype.

But still, doing worse than Metroid Prime 2 at any rate is nothing to be proud of, and remember that i've been one of the more vehement defenders of Other M (which isn't to say blind, i acknowledge the game's flaws, but much of the hate is misguided or ill-founded)

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

It seems in order to get that 500-1500k range you had to appeal using spin-offs huh, because the lowest selling mainline Metroid is well over 500k above what Other M is.

Above: still the best game of the year.

I don't know about that. I would assume that many Metroid fans still bought it anyway, even if they just did it out of curiosity of how bad of a game it really is or to add it to their collection.

I also find it hard to call this game's sales good, it was a fairly big game with a well known brand name and treated as such by Nintendo with their marketing efforts. Besides, the first "bad" game launching after a series of stellar titles usually doesn't show how much the reputation of the brand was damaged. It's the game that comes out afterwards. MOM wasn't that tough of a sale for Nintendo, because fans trusted the name. That is gone now and people will take more of a wait and see approach when it comes to the next installment in the Metroid series.

I would't expect a new one so soon.

It depends on what you consider a Spin-off.  because Metroid Prime Hunters was still considered one of the 'Prime' games.  And Metroid Prime Trilogy only sold 700,000.

Also, Sakamoto has already said he's interested in making a new Metroid.  So we really have no basis to say a new one wouldn't come.  And considering the Sakamoto made Metroid games are usually about 4-5 years apart, it could easily be another 3 years or more before its made anyway.

I won't deny the sales are weaker for the hype put into it.  However, considering its gettling close to the sales of games like Prime 2 and Super Metroid, which were also hyped with major advertising and treated like a 'major' Nintendo title, I don't see how Other M can be considered so much of a failure.  Remember, Super Metroid, the fan favorite, only sold 1.4 million.  If Other M, the fans hated game, can sell close to that lifetime, it may just prove Metroid fans will buy any Metroid game.

Most of the sales are at bargain bin prices which started only a couple weeks after release.  It can sell another 500k and these sales are still awful because of that, MP1 and 2 never dropped to Other M prices even when became Players CHoice/Platinum hits games.  MP3 didn't either.

I could have sworn the last time I saw the game in stores, namely Wal-Mart and Gamestop, it was still the original launch prive of $49.99.  However, it does seem to be going for $20.00 online.

I'm not in a position to correct you.  But I don't think the game went to that price in the first month.  I bought the game about 3-4 weeks after it launchend and it was still $50.

I too enjoyed Other M, but even I can't deny the game underperformed.

In Japan it might be considered a success relative to the Prime games. In the states it has done reasonably well, but in Europe I wouldn't call it anything less than a bomb.

It's true that the negative hype all but drowned-out the big budget advertizing it got, and I also agree that the game will continue selling based on positive word-of-mouth by those who did enjoy it. It can still pass a million, but bear in mind that it is one of very few Nintendo first-party titles to see a massive price-cut across the board soon after release. Retailers like Amazon are regularly offering it for $30 or even $20 in order to drive sales, or for all I know to clear surplus stock.

Where is it at bargain prices?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

It seems to be substantially overtracked in Japan compared to Media Create numbers.  71,410 compared to 109,568 on VGC in 2010.

Still good compared to the Prime games, but I believe Nintendo was hoping for Other M to increase the presence of the series in Japan.
