Forums - Sales Discussion - X360 HW Shipments since Launch, Profits and Losses Chart

Shouldn't we look into these graphs a bit more in depth? For some reason some people are just looking at it and forgeting about other products the company offer.

Nintendo had the GBA during the years of GC, which was a huge money maker and the DS launched in late 04. DS lite was around in the Wii era, so its not home consoles making that money, its Nintendo. Hats of to them, but it does get annoying when people say the Game cube made more money than the PS2, cause it obviously didn't. I could never gauge how much the PSP was costing/making Sony though.

I know we're using this graph as a guideline, but since SCE was merged with the mobile phone and PC division, its hard to track profits properly. Nintendo is the only company we can do this reliably. Microsoft's EDD includes the Zune, and PC games (Mac office suite too strangely) sales as well. Don't think those are big players, but they could make a difference.

Anyway rant over. Hats off to Nintendo and Microsoft for generating cash. Sucks that Sony had a few bad years, but least they're seeing some inflow now =D. Gaming is healthy atm, which is what I like to see. Well atm its the first year with all 3 up lol.

I believe Windows Phone is in EDD

Doesn't include Sony's final Q for their FY (coming May 25th), or Microsoft's (coming July 21st)

so MS E&D has made more this year so far (another quarter to come) than SCE ever has in a single year in its history....?  thats incredible..

We don't have golden years of PS1 in this chart though. If I remember correctly Sony made more profit out of PS1 than PS2. (saw some charts on neogaf. Can't find them now). It's pretty bizarre though that Sony made so little profit from PS2 considering that over 150 million consoles have been sold with over 1.5 billion games. Maybe PS3 R&D cost hurt them more than we know.

Having XBL subscriptions probably pays huge dividends for MS. With 12.5 million gold subscribers, they're making $625 million a year that Sony isn't (soon even more with $60 yearlies).

I love graphs like these because they show that Nintendo has always pwned when it comes to making money off of the gaming business. I must admit that I hate their pricing practices, but it seems to work out for them in the end. I have to compare Nintendo to a company like Ford, even if they start having issues making profit in the distant future, they'll still be around for many more decades. They are a staple of the industry, and always will be.

How did Sony not make any more money selling 150m consoles!!!! But at least they are making some money now, though the Japan issues won't have helped (something like 150,000 PS3s destroyed as well as many other less direct impacts)

just imagine what the losses during the ps3 era would be, if they werent selling the ps2, and even the psp.

they were probably making tons off profit off ps2 (and good profit off psp) when ps3 launched which really helped soften the blow. even though that softened blow still, broke nearly eevery bone in the body, but body casts are better than caskets, i guess

Seece already confirmed that no single year (including PS1) from Sony has more than 1 billion in profit. See the last page.

I assume you mean weren't not were?

And yeah, the PS3 seems a bit stupid in many many ways, but at least we got to play Uncharted

yes yes

In 2008 Ms and sony redefined there devisions. So charts attributing sales to one piece of hardware are totally inaccurate.
