Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 3DS sales slump below DS - why, and what Ninty can do to fix it

I'm really not worried ...

People forget that the DS did not sell particularly well initially, and it wasn't until the first hardware revision and the release of several important games that its sales really started to explode. Outside of a "coolness factor" to own one early, there really is no point to owning one yet and that will likely change when some more games come out.

Beyond that, I do think there are probably some people who are waiting for details about the NGP prior to buying a 3DS; and in many cases I think they are holding off on a delusional belief that the NGP will be cost competitive with the 3DS. If you look at how exchange rates have changed around 2/3 to 3/4 of the price increase of the 3DS (relative to the DS) could be explaned by echange rate changes; and the other 1/4 to 1/3 might be a buffer protecting against exchange rate changes in the future. In a couple months I expect that the same people who piss and moan about the 3DS being $250 will be the same people who are claiming that $400 (or more) is justified for the NGP; but the vast majority of people holding out to see what was offered by the NGP will discount it as a purchase at that point.

I'm glad someone understands this...

I wish more people did, were they expecting it to sell a million a week or something?

Probably they just can't remember how previous new console performed. It's 3 weeks that I'm posting DS performance after its launch in EMEAA, showing that 3DS is exactly in line with it, but no one listens XD

Well time will speak, especially May/June in Japan, even the COMG chart is having multiple 3DS titles which should open well (even better than SSFIV, so there's gonna be a push of hardware).

Japan is the only territory in which 3DS is doing worse than DS after the launch, but it's too difficult to accept I guess. Even for Nintendo, they hoped for better sales than DS...

The 3DS needs a re-design. It looks too similar to the DS to look "innovative". Price at $200 and REAL SOFTWARE not just ports and remakes.

pwin´ every other villain since 1994

How could a redesign change its look? For mass market DSi, DSL and the first DS look the same.

The real software is arriving, pretty much every console have the megatons released months after the launch, look at the DS...

what makes a game a megaton btw? and this is a sincere questions as I am a bit confused on it..didn't Nintendogs sell over 20mil on the DS. Wouldn't that be considered a Megaton? if not why?

Teorically yes, but it has been presented and developed like more of a Nintendogs 1.5 than a real new game. People is not buying it because no one said a good reason for people who already owned one to buy this new game. Think: if I have Nintendogs and liked it very much, why should I buy a new console at launch and a new game which does not offer me anything new? This is the same reason why neither SSFIV is a megaton: you get streetpass but lose in graphics, the userbase for this game is smaller than it could have been if it was a new game.

Many are saying Zelda is the first megaton...I'm quite diffident, it's a remake, it can't be as big as the original Ocarina. I'm more confident smaller system sellers in japan will be RE: Mercenaries, One Piece and hopefully Kid Icarus. The real megatons for this year are Mario Kart, Mario 3d, Animal Crossing and Kingdom Hearts  for Japan IMHO. For the west we'll see, I'm sure Nintendo will try to launch some sort of new thing like they did with brain training, unexpected thing turned out to be the real megatons on Wii and DS.

so in other words, the 3DS needs killer apps rather than a megaton? one that is unique and gives a fresh experience with the device sort of? cuz I see your point with nintendogs and SF. well tbh I haven't even tried out nintendogs so I don't know for sure but I did get to play SF 4 3DS recently, it jsut felt like yet another SF game with 3d as the new addition.

anywho thanks for answering :) it's been bugging me for a while.

and btw is there a KH for 3ds announced? or rumor?
