Forums - Sony Discussion - What people blaming Geohotz and the "hackers" seem to be missing...

No it isn't. Sony were neglectful and they have to take responsibility for their lack of action. i don't think the people frantically checking their bank details care what Sony's "intentions" were. Nor will the media. Or the courts, if it comes to that.

But wait, Sony can do no wrong, n'est-ce pas?

When customer data is potentially released into the wild, it's the results that matter, "good intentions" be damned.

Is that this security breach was a server-side flaw. "Hacking" a PS3 shouldn't give anyone access to critical PSN information any more than hacking a computer or install of Firefox would give you access to Amazon's customer database.

The tools to defend against this type of attack have been available for years. I can build a secure e-commerce store in a matter of hours and get it locked down to prevent this type of information breach using off-the-shelf software. Why can't Sony do the same on their PROPRIETARY system?

No matter whether you think Sony was in the right over the Geohotz fiasco, they royally screwed the pooch on this one.

And that is no one's fault but their own. They deserve every bit of bad press they're going to get over this.

This is all true, but try explaining that to the fanboys. One's favourite corporation can do no wrong, so scapegoats have to be found and messengers need to be shot. Clearly, everything bad that happens to Sony or everything bad that Sony does is the fault of TEH PIRATES, RRRRAAAGGGGEEE! Sony are absolved from all responsibility for their actions or lack thereof.

Oh dear, I thought after this post I thought those types of people wouldn't turn up but seems they have.

Valid points in the OP, I fail to see the hating .....

Every security system does have flaws but there are basic things you're supposed to get right.  Sony did a wonderful job on the hard stuff with the PS3 but they failed pretty hard on the basic stuff.

And the ps3 wasn't hacked for 4 years and they are fixing the problems that came up now, I know it's a pain in the ass but these things happen, they can't go any faster with fixing the problem, I'm just as annoyed as everyone, now if psn goes back up and then ends up going down again after the upgrades then I'll be calling Sony incompetent

Like I said, Sony did a really good job with the hard stuff but failed miserably on the basic stuff.

It's great they went four years without being hacked but that's because people just assumed they did basic things that any semi-competent person would do.  Apparently this mishap was done by an incredibly easy and straightforward method, which is a good reason to be not-so-happy.  If they had to go through some horribly complicated unknown or new process, yes, it's annoying but not entirely their fault but when it's something any amateur could do, it's alright to be annoyed with Sony too.

really? wheres the proof, i didnt even know the court case started.

if your going to make assumptions atleast make reasonable and realistic ones or provide the evidence you have on the strength of their security.

every corporation can be hacked, it doesnt mean every single one is neglectful. Its just that the attacks have been focused on sony because geo hot failed and so did anonymous' little protest in sony stores.

WOW.....just f***ing WOW.

its everyones fault except the hackers.

people need to stop being delusional....im out of here before i go crazy reading this crap.

Of course it's the hackers' fault. They took the data.

It's also Sony's fault for not stopping them.

When building an online system, one has to go in with the mindset that every person on the planet is going to try to exploit it. Sony obviously failed to keep that in mind.

Rocketpig, you can try to argue with people all you want, but you are talking to bunch of individuals that believes sony as an organization does no wrong.

EDIT: intentionally does no wrong.

its the intentions that matter. its not like they left the keys outside the doors like in someones failed analogy.

Intentoin don't men absolutely jack shit. The end result is that Sony was not careful, now millions of people's information could be compromised.

Furthermore, I see that you are unable to follow a simple analogy so I will spell it out for you. Sony assumed that the PS3 will not be hacked and based its security system around that assumption. In this case the keys are hacked PS3s, the paper box is the PS3 security, and the door is the access to the PSN servers. THe only reason I made a mistake in my analogy is that I forgot to mention that inside my door, millions of people trusted me with their information and they assumed the door will not be broken into.

There's a reason why the hating happens.

See, some people live vicariously through their favourite games and consoles; sad but true. And, given the nature of the site, vgchartz attracts large numbers of such troubled individuals. To them, criticising their favourite game or console is like a personal insult, or an insult against their family. Even if the criticism is completely fair, there's going to be butthurt.

When people feel themselves get seriously riled up about this stuff, they should recognise that it's time to put the joypad down.

What part of the word "if" do you not understand? I was giving a hypothetical scenario.

Again these things happen to everyone, Live was unstable for 2 weeks and alot more important things have been down just as long for just as stupid reasons, annoyed yes I'm annoyed everyone is annoyed but calling them incompetent and failures or whatever just isn't being fair lol, and again as long as the secrurity updates work I won't have any more issues but right now I am annoyed but people are going way too far with the bashing

millions of people also trust the bank wont be robbed....they still get robbed. is it the banks fault?

teehee PSN log is available: http://shockwavelounge.blogspot.com/2011/04/playstation-network-log-of-hacker.html

no need to blame geohot or any other hackers... we can only blame Sony now... Fake Virus Creator and Javascript injection... which.. anyone from anywhere can do...
