Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Iwata: Alliances with other firms are needed

I'm pretty certain he's talking about the lack of cross-promotion with third party developers for core games. And I'm almost confident that this is one of MANY things that Iwata mentioned that he'd like to tackle and get fixed moving forward. Bloomberg clips one quote and you guys go bonkers....

That's exactly what I was thinking. It just seemd that Iwata was talking about marketing and advertising and perhaps needing to check out firms to help with that. Titles like Zelda and Mario don't really need a whole lot because they have THAT big of name recognition but they could need help with their smaller titles and with third party exclusives.

Notable line from the original post:

Last time Nintendo screwed an Alliance we got the Playstation and three horrible Zelda games

Nintendo isn't going to get 3rd party support until they downgrade their AAAA games to AA games.

3rd parties cannot compete using their AAA games, otherwise.

I lol'd because it's true

I was thinking as few others here. I guess about the 3rd party support. Maybe they asks the 3rd party developper what they wanted on N6 so they can developp on Nintendo console also.

If the leak are true, this will explain by the easy to develop and port to project Café

But we must first concentrate ourselves on the way to entertain people, for video games to live. Else, it's a world where sales representative will win, which has as effect to kill creativity. I want to say to the creators all around the world:"Courage, Dare!". Shigeru Miyamoto.

Frankly, I think this is a step in the right direction.  But Nintendo needs ot be careful.  Like the article said, every time Nintendo has tired to partner with other companies, they end up getting used, abused and then dropped like a sack of kittens to fend for themselves.  Not just the Playstation, but you have the N64 and GC, almost completely devoid of third party games.  Whereas Nintendo actively tried to get them to work on the system.  Even going so far as backdoor 'partnerships' and funding.

Its no wonder they went more internal with the Wii.  If people keep stabbing you in the back, you defend yourself with whatever strengths you have.  And Nintendo has proven its quite strong even by itself.  Though I doubt they can pull the same trick again, which is why they're once again looking for third party support.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

Iwata is pretty honest about most things intellectually speaking I'd imagine he sees something he doesn't like that Nintendo can't fix directly. We'll see...

Online?

Woot !!!    Called it

Iwata on internal game developing, online implementation conflicts:

"The policy "Jimae-shugi" (doing things by one's bootstraps) you mentioned has two aspects: it is a great honor to succeed in a business by making the best use of our own unique strengths, but on the other hand, it is a shame to fall behind the times clinging to it. I believe that it is the key to Nintendo, which develops both hardware and software in-house, to create new experiences which have been neither enjoyed nor requested by consumers, and let them say, "This is the very thing I have been wanting to play" once they have actually tried it. The more we depend on outside resources for this point, the more strength Nintendo will lose. It is vital for Nintendo to reinforce this point and cultivate developers inside the company. I hope that Nintendo is continuously considered as a company which is particularly good at such a thing, and I will make efforts for this.

In slight connection with the question about Wii's concept before, honestly speaking, Wii's future could have been different if Nintendo had made better partnerships with outside companies in the field of network services at the early stages of the penetration of Wii. In other words, Nintendo might have been a little obsessed with the policy "Jimae-shugi" at that time. Although we have already put ourselves back on track, we would like to clearly differentiate what is our true strength from what we can basically do by ourselves but can be done better by more skillful outside specialists in order not to fall into that trap again. You may be aware of some features which I am implying now in relation to the future developments of Nintendo 3DS and Wii's successor system that we announced yesterday. I am sorry I cannot say anything more specific today. - Satoru Iwata"

On the other hand, it is not true that Nintendo is able to internally develop everything and keep up with the current pace of change. In fact, some of the software titles published by Nintendo are developed by outside developing companies, called "second-party developers" in this industry. There are already a lot of companies which receive various advice from Nintendo in the process of software development and whose products are sold under the brand of Nintendo, and for instance, I was working for one of such companies, HAL Laboratory, Inc., which developed "Kirby's Dream Land" and "Super Smash Bros." Considering the existence of such companies, Nintendo is not totally based on the policy "Jimae-shugi."

In the field of networks in particular, however, I admit that we cannot do business in pace with the changes in the world and the requests from consumers only within our company and with development companies we have long been in touch with. I am not sure which term suits us as collaborations for this purpose, M&A or partnership. Anyway, I feel that we would spoil the party in a negative way if "we sticked to create everything by ourselves" based on the policy "Jimae-shugi," and eventually it would make our business slow.

I think this is posibly PR spin

Nintendo's 1st party support for Wii hasn't made much sence to me since 2008.  The decline in interest for the console is  the painfully obvious effect of that cause from my point of view.

Why though.  I have ideas I spose, things going to be much clearer soon cant wait for E3!

Edit: well sports resort was 09 so I guess they made it that far, thats the last game that made sence.

Nintendo has always been big on strategic aliances.

What made no sense to me was,

No 1st Party Wii board support other then Wii Fit, and then

That would have been ok if 3rd party would have made a few big hits,

SEGA failed with Monkey ball.  I see that as the big problem personally.

Thats the next game i planed to buy i never bought. I think my Wii game

buying habits died off from that point forward.

Not to take anything away from the Wii Mote or anything but to be honest, Motion controls suck

huge ass to me. The Wii Board was what really sold this system, to people like me

that have been out of the consul market since SNES.  OK so im a PC gamer, and yes

PC has been pissing me off, the last few years,  But now what?    I bought a Wii partially

to run away from Broken games company fixed after releasing.  Now Nintendo's moving

forward to that? Oh Great!!!

You know People buy Nintendo cause they don't want the same half ass crap.   I don't

see to many folks like myself buying the next Nintendo consul.     It will be intresting to see

this E3. Looking forward to it.

Honestly Nintendo, you did a great job marketing the Wii and the Nintendo DS. Not so much right now but Nintendo themselves did a far better job then I think any third party marketing firm could do. Infact Reggie is a marketing expert if Nintendo can't handle marketing their own devices then I can't see any third parties being more successful.

I also note Iwata mentions marketing 3DS. According to Reggie the lack of marketing was done purposely to keep demand from out pacing supply. It will be interesting to see what Nintendo does this winter when supply out does demand on a global scale.

I also read the recent article where Iwata talks about how Nintendo can't support their platforms with enough software on their own anymore. He then talks about what happened with Brawl. I wonder if this means Nintendo will out source more of its IP's to third parties to raise the amount of Nintendo published software hitting shelves.

Imagine if Nintendo brought in another 5-7 developers and liscensed them Nintendo properties. Nintendo software would eat MS and Sony alive. Its Nintendo's properties that everyone buys Nintendo platforms for and if those titles are availible in abundance they will no doubt damage the competition!
