Forums - Nintendo Discussion - And yet another rumor about 'Wii 2'..from IGN.

i hope its not as big as the old Xbox 360. i like the small Wii looks nice. Also if it's released this year that means it will drop in price earlier, which means i will probably get one sooner than if it releases in 2012.

Much more capable than the PS3/X360.  The R700 series is DX 10.1 compliant (though it says revamped so it may be up to 11 spec or that may refer to the manufacturing process which would allow for faster speeds and less heat).  It would also push about 2-3 times the Gpixel fill rate (depending the on model it's based on) of the PS3..

CPU wise, depends on if it's still based on the same POWER generation as the Xenon CPU or if uses Power6 or Power7 generation.  If it uses the latter 2, much better performance.

Im sure they would do well even if its just the same design with 2MB of cache and out of order execution for the CPU. As for the GPU at this point I figure the best bet is the RV740. Im sure with better GDDR5 interface design and a little of the fixed function stuff removed as well as improvements in the 40nm process they could get that design well under 120mm^2 and into a reasonable thermal envelope.

Nintendo Hale Specs

Custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC
  • 3 symmetrical cores running at 4.29 GHz each
  • 2 hardware threads per core; 6 hardware threads total
  • 1 VMX-256 vector unit per core; 3 total
  • 256 VMX-256 registers per hardware thread
  • 2 MB L2 cache
CPU Game Math Performance
  •   ~10.25 billion dot product operations per second
Custom ATI Graphics Processor
  • 627 MHz
  • 15 MB embedded DRAM
  • 48-way parallel floating-point dynamically-scheduled shader pipelines
  • Unified shader architecture
Polygon Performance
  • 600 million triangles per second
Pixel Fill Rate
  • 16 gigasamples per second fillrate using 4X MSAA
Shader Performance
  • 56 billion shader operations per second
Memory
  • 1GB GDDR3 RAM
  • 829MHz DDR
  • Unified memory architecture
Memory Bandwidth
  • 22.4 GB/s memory interface bus bandwidth
  • 256 GB/s memory bandwidth to EDRAM
  • 21.6 GB/s front-side bus
Overall System Floating-Point Performance
  •   2.25 TFLOP

Since these parts (from 2008) are custom and slightly improved, I am going under the assumption that Nintendo made marked improvements similar in scope to the GC-----> Wii transition.

Texture cache bandwidth / framebuffer bw./ z-buffer bw. Front-side bus bandwidth / main memory bw. / CPU DMIPS / cache CPU / GPU / Memory
Wii
15.52 GB/s / 3.888 GB/s / 7.776 GB/s 1.944 GB/s / 3.888 GB/s / 1691 729 mhz / 243 mhz / 24 MB - 64 MB (1TSRAM GDDR3) - 3 MB cache
GC

10.40 GB/s / 2.6 GB/s / 5.2 GB/s

1.3 GB/s / 2.6 GB/s / 1125 485 mhz / 162.5 mhz / 24 MB - 16 MB (ARAM) - 3 MB cache

It seems like they just upgraded everything by about a Third.

SQUILLIAM! Would you mind fixing my above Hale table with your most educated and assumed specifications?

Acording to some tech people in GAF this specs are 50% more powerful than the PS3 or even 75%, so it's a quite nice jump.

How would this be a nice jump, i'm no tech expert but that seems rather low.  Lets look at MW2 for example it runs at 600p which is about 614k pixels.  Full 1080p is almost 2.1mil pixels.

50-75 percent seems like the PS2 to xbox comparison.  For a next gen system i would expect much more.

At what price??

I don't really see any reason to fill out that form. Some of the features in older GPUs aren't even listed as features anymore or even talked about.

My best guess:

  • 640 Stream processors
  • 600-700Mhz
  • 70 GB/s bandwidth with 1GB/GDDR5
  • 800 Gigaflops floating point performance

And:

  • 4 core 2.8Ghz out of order execution PPC with one core reserved for OS.
  • 2 MB cache

Tease.

A 50 - 75 % jump is smaller than what the Wii was over the Gamecube. This would basically make the N6 a PS3 and a PS3 Slim duck-taped together (rule of thumb: the smaller a console is in physical size, the less powerful it is).

You mean a PS3 and a PS2 Slim taped together???

RolStoppable said:

No, I mean what I typed. A PS2 isn't 50 - 75 % as powerful as a PS3, so it would make no sense.

But a PS3 and a PS3 Slim taped together = $599 US dollars

Aren't a PS3 and PS3 slim the same power wise? I hope it's not two PS3 'phats' taped together. Where would we fit that?! (rhetorical question)

Formerly known as LuStaysTru but that was back when I still knew my password.

That's pretty specific O_o

I feel strange

outside of putting a DS touch screen on the controller none of this is making any sense at all.
