Forums - Sales Discussion - why did mass effect 2 only sell 2.3m on 360?

Well it had HYPE, it had marketing ,it scored very high and it didn't have much competition at release so why did it only sell 2.3m? barely edging the first mass effect despite higher opening.

because it was released 26 months after the first Mass Effect and yet already outsold the first one.
Gears of War 2 needed much longer to catch up with Gears.

Legs are also better so the gap will only widen from now on.

Also, the first mass effect was on xbox only for a year. Where Mass Effect 2 launched on both PC and xbox.

Not sure how that factors in... but it is a variable to consider when analyzing the performance between ME1 and ME2

I think the point is Barozi, that a AAA game like Gears sold 6 mil, and ME2 despite being the best game of the year and quite possibily the best game in the consoles library has sold a mere 2 mil copies.

OT. i'm guessing the series has done okay on the PC, clearly Bioware had bigger plans for the series which is why they released it on the PS3. and i think they did mention recently how selling 10 mil copies quantifies as a huge hit. which is probabily why ME 2 is said to be more 'accessible' with the removal of many RPG customisation opitions; in order to appeal to the more causal fanbase.

so why didnt it work??

i'm guessing that the 360 fans just wernt interested. no sand box, no multiplayer, it just hasnt been the huge hit it couldve been. and the Bioware have learned from their mistake and now decided to go multiplatform.

It's a story driven RPG, the middle part in a trilogy. Games such as Fallout, Fable or Oblivion are more stand-alone games.

When you look at other WRPGs on the 360 the most that one sold is 3.4 million for Fallout 3. (Fable 2 sold 3.9 but I saw it bundled quite often) So WRPGs don't seem to be selling much more.

I can't get why this game is so praised. It's a shooter masqueraded as an RPG, mimicking the old Half Life (but not as good as a shooter). Besides that, 2.3 millions is good, isn't it?

The obvious reason for that is, that it's a WRPG and singleplayer only. Totally not comparable to Gears of War.
It's not the 360 fans' fault, it's the fault of every gamer since those games in general simply don't sell as well as multiplayer orientated games or Final Fantasy.
It will cross 3m eventually and then be in touch with two of the best games ever made. Oblivion and Fallout 3. So it's doing really well.
and the first Mass Effect also did really well.

eh for my reason was i actually didnt care for mass effect so wasnt intrested on playing it and also cuz when mass effect 2 came out my xbox 60 gb at that time prod so i couldnt play it , now i have a slim maybe i should give it a try

Too many haters

- RPG fanboys complained it was too much of a shooter and was too dumbed down (though likely not playing it enough to recognize the RPG depth)

- Shooter fanboys came in expecting GeoW in space but found out it had too many RPG elements and wasn't as refined as what they're used to in shooters.

- PS3 fanboys took every chance they could to minimize how good the game was due it not being a PS3 exclusive.

- Mass Effect haters kept harping on the problems of the first game (which there were many) and how it's not worth it.

- Bioware haters came out in force to evangelize on how formulaic and boring Bioware games are

- EA haters came out to say how much EA is ruining Bioware and how MGS should've bought them out instead and the game suffers because of it.

- Multiplayer fanboys complain that there is no multiplayer so why bother

Man ...... did I really type up all of that negativity.  I need a hug ...

Well many people thought it was overrated. And 2.3 million isn't bad at all. As for the legs..... I think VG overtracked the first couple of weeks which made it sound so big. According to VGC this game sold 670k week 1 in americas and around 500k week 1 according to NPD. So the legs weren't that bad but people didn't really like the game
