Hrm... no handhelds? Then I'm afraid you've nerfed one of the 3 that I see as vital. Because, sticking to my guns, the 3 critical systems to see gaming's finest are:

1. SNES

2. PS2

3. DS

If you're not going to allow the DS, though, I'm going to say the 2600. See where things were, and some of the games that led to the big crash.

Sega MegaDrive (Genesis) - Awesome first party games from Sega and solid 3rd party support.

PS1- Best final fantasy games IMHO. Also a ton of great platforming and racing games.

PS2- Most balanced console that covers all bases.

Actual must haves in order for you to call yourself a true gamer? Well they are quite clearly the consoles which, if you have not played, you cannot really understand the gaming industry

1) N64

2) Wii

3) iphone/ipod touch
