but there are less ps3 owners than wii/360 owners?

I think the age of the user base of each console plays a big factor in online presence. Also, I don't know if anyone posted this yet, but the active install base of the PS3 is higher than that of the 360, so that might be another reason. The Wii's active install base is higher than both, but the average age of Wii owners is probably a lot younger than the PS3 and 360 user base.

"According to the company's data, the Nintendo Wii continues to enjoy the world's largest install base with 75.5 million active units worldwide, but the active install base of PS3s reached 43.4 million at the close of 2010 versus Xbox 360's 42.9."

At the beginning of the generation, PS3 fans were criticized everywhere they went for their console choice IRL.  Even going into Gamestop to buy a PS3 game in 2007, the employees would question my console choice.  "Xbox 360 is getting Halo 3, why don't you like it?"

As a result, people needed to vent on the internet.

We can even look at the history of this site.  At the beginning it was overwhelmingly Nintendo fanboys.  Most just freely attacked / trolled the PS3 and were even encouraged to do it by the mods at the time (FishyJoe, Shams, etc.).  Sony fans would almost be banned just for saying positive things about the PS3 while Nintendo fans (aka Gballzack) would get away with murder for a long time.  Eventually, the Sony fanboys started arriving to defend themselves and now there are more Sony fanboys than Nintendo fanboys on this site.

I think that's why MS fanboys never showed up here in numbers.  They were never caught in the fire as much.  At the beginning of the generation, there was more of the non-aggression pact between the 360 and Wii fans (aka Wii60.).

Sony fanboys had two fronts to fight (Nintendo and Microsoft) while Microsoft and Nintendo fanboys were mostly focused on Sony and not each other.  I guess it was because the underdogs uniting from last generation.  At least thats how it worked in Fanboy culture.  I was always more pro Nintendo and Sony and not so much MS.

To this day, in raw membership this site is more pro Sony, but in power structure - it is more pro Nintendo.  People that run this site are more pro Nintendo, I think.

Man, if that's true, I'm glad I wasn't around back then.  That sounds like it sucked.

@ OP

At the moment it has fewer owners, but at the end of the gen I doubt that will be the case.  If you're speaking just home consoles, then you can't forget the PS3's dissapointing launch and first year or so.  If Sony hadn't stumbled early on, there's no doubt in my mind the PS3 would be 2nd right now.  Probably would have had smaller gap to the Wii that the 360 has now.  But things as they did happen, I'm just glad Sony was able to correct itself before the PS brand went to ruins.  The fact they have been able to do so, especially looking at previous console dropouts (Atari, Sega), is nothing short of a miracle.

Of course, as others have pointed out, you're overlooking two big things.  One, you can't go by VGC alone.  And more importantly two, Sony fans are also comprised of people who have bought the PSP, which has probably shipped ~70 mil units so far and will probably reach ~80-85 mil units before all is said and done.

PS3 owners are rich as fuck, I have an Ipad and Android phone on me at all times and I even use them while I'm playing games on my expensive as sin TV, overbearing sound system which is pushing me back into my reclining leather arm chair, which also happens to sit next to my three shelves of games and shit. Using this evidence, I can say that PS3 owners are rich and all have Ipads that they use to post on game forums on a continous basis. It's not about numbers, it's about the ease of use.

But really, go visit IGN, Eurogamer or Giant Bomb (best site on the net), they are overwhelmingly filled with 360 fans.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

At the beginning it was a small website with a simple design that dealt with stats and numbers. I do believe the commonly tossed about idea of the relationship between consoles and age holds a grain of truth, so the older Nintendo fans were here first along with a few others represting different consoles- Diomedes, Monty etc.

In hindsight those days were filled with a lot of postering, exaggeration and complete nonsense. We had many posters making wacky predictions, essay length posts of certain events to transpire and there seemed to be an air among posters of complete understanding of the industry and the direction it was going. (Not to say that's fully gone.)

"John Lucas says: mark my words: this is sony's last hurrah in the gaming business. there will not be a ps4"

Marked John. Marked.

The concept of this site being a hating ground for Sony, then the troops arrived en masse is amusing. It may well be true.

I think its a safe bet PS3 has a more hardcore audience.

And what do hardcore gamers like to do? Get on the interweb and yell at people that don't have the console they love.

Technically, any hardcore gamer should have every platform.

It's generally only the ones who are limited to one or two that have to rant against the other platforms they either can't afford or can't justify the extra expense.

The truly dedicated fanboys will either buy or claim to own other platforms for the explicit purpose of validating their negative opinions of said platforms.

What I remember John Lucas saying is that Sony would exit the gaming industry and drop the PS3 in 2009.  Well, here we are in 2011 with PS3 kicking the sales just fine.

He had quite a cult of followers, though and many thought he was a prophet.  Even though just about all his predictions turned out wrong.

We do still have a few members here that think they are expert analysts, while they are really just trying to push their fanboy views.  That goes for all sides of the war.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

because theres more things to boast about if your a ps3 fan.

at the beginning on the generation, it was the other way around.

It depends on what forums you go to. I've been to sites where the PS3 section was dead last in posts... and then I've been to places like Gametrailers.
