Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rumour: Silverlight To Bring Windows Phone 7 Apps To Xbox 360

VG247

Flash alternative Silverlight is said to be on its way to the Xbox 360, granting the console the ability to run Windows Phone 7 games and applications.

Engadget reports a rumour that next week’s MIX 11 Microsoft developer conference will introduce a new version of Silverlight with cross-platform capabilities.

Silverlight was launched in 2007 as an alternate method of creating media-rich Internet content beyond the ubiquitous Adobe Flash, and has been through five major revisions.

Microsoft has since integrated the tech into its mobile phone environments.

err, im not microsoft or xbox bashing right now, but man do i dislike silverlight.

why, you may ask (it has nothing to do with this). NETFLIX. Netflix, uses silverlight and silverlight streaming is terrible, low quality, even for HD streams, i dont feel like looking it up but i think engagdet or cnet had an article about how soon or hopefully netflix will stop using silverlight because of the bad quality.

but nontheless still a good feature for xbox

That story by cnet on Netflix was from 2009 and since then Netflix has come out defending it stating that Silverlight is by far the most stable means to delivering movies available.  There really haven't been any issues since.

Silverlight (microsoft's attempt at completing with Adobe Flash) and Microsoft Azure ( their big cloud computing initiatve) and two entities that Microsoft is really pushing.

The following big companies are already using silverlight: 3M, NASA, General Mills, Volvo, Xerox, The Associated Press, T-Mobile and soon to be Toyota.  This is proof that Silverlight is not a candle in the wind.

With the current rumors that are brewing, it's  likely that silverlight is coming to the 360 which will provide immense library of apps  and functionality to the aging system - especially integration with windows phone 7.

I'll go one further, I predict that Microsoft is going to unleash a cloud computing (Microsoft Azure) bomb this year, basically eliminating alot of the issues with storage on the 360.  We'll see what happens - usually when microsoft is very quiet (like right now) there is a very good reason.

P.S. NO I am not being a blind 360 fanboy, this stuff is very likely.  I give my PS3 and Wii lots of love too...

I thought Silverlight was dead except for supporting what they had already?

Looks like there's a war inside MS of HTML5 vs Silverlight. They keep one-upping each other with press releases.
