Forums - Sony Discussion - Tretton: "We expect strong growth in the next fiscal year"

PS3, according to one report, just passed the Xbox 360 in worldwide sales. The momentum for Sony's console hasn't been quite the same here in the U.S. where the Xbox 360, helped by Kinect, remains ahead by several million units, but Sony Computer Entertainment head Jack Tretton is more than confident in the PlayStation business.

Speaking to Fast Company, Tretton asserted that PS3 is just now "hitting its stride," and he expects much more growth in the years ahead. He also believes the investments made in technologies like Move and 3D will ultimately "reap dividends on for many, many years."

"We're not in cruise control mode; we're still in growth mode. Fortunately, it's been steady growth for the last four years, and we anticipate strong growth again in the next fiscal year," said Tretton.

Pretty interesting interview. Definitely worth checking out. Possibly a hint at the projection for the next fiscal year. 17 million possible?

PS3 hasn't surpassed 360 worldwide yet...

Is he talking about UK sales or WW sales ?

It was "according to one report".

OT: I agree with Tretton, price cut incoming.

He was actually talking about active units. PS3 has 43.4 million whereas 360 has 42.9 million.

Meaning that worldwide PS3 is being played more but in total sales 360 has 52.8 million and PS3 has 49.1 million

Financial reports in just a few weeks, right? Would be rather shocking to see them beat their target and expect even higher sales next FY on top of that. A price cut doesn't appear to be sufficient to top last year to me given the console's recent YOY drops accompanied by its natural aging and saturation.

I agree with Tretton... seems like PS3 sales is growing.

A price cut this year and I can see Sony projecting and matching 17 million sales for 2012 fiscal year (1st April 2011 - 31th March 2012).

17 million in a year? I highly doubt that.

Which, ofcourse everyone knows, is total bullshit.

It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that they'll meet their 15 million projection. They still thought they would hit it when they gave their quarterly report in February, and projecting for the next 2 months is barely even projecting. Most of the retail orders would have already been placed by then. If you're referring to the year on year comparisons from the past few weeks, they're all somewhat anomolous. March last year was simply quite good because of all of the major releases (GOW3, FFXIII, Hokuto Musuo, Yakuza 4, Torne). Up until March the YOY declines were relatively minimal and if you look at future weeks in 2010 from April onward you'll notice that it's mostly easy comparisons.
