If this is a serious attempt from a group in Anon, there's going to be a lot of mess at Sony, some fans are going to be pissed most likely, and well... there's not anything Sony or their fans can do about it.

I'm kinda ignorant to this hacking crap...  What can they possibly do to sony, and should I be worried? lol

Well in the past they've taken down entire sites, posted the information of those that use the site for all the world to see, they've destroyed valuable information they find on these servers that if not backed up will be lost forever, and if it is backed up it better not be online where they can find it or they might target that as well.

Basically if they could find the keys to the Playstation Network for example... they would, and they would bring it down if they felt the need to do so, but knowing their past antics they'd just set all the prices on PSN to zero and let the people on PSN do the rest just for the lulz

So lets say they do that and I dl me some free games, will I get in trouble? :P

I don't agree with Sony's actions but Anonymous are nothing more than children .  Sure, they can screw stuff up but they aren't any better than the people they attack.  It's like they try to come off as Batman but they really come off as an eight year old with a cheap cape yelling as loud as he can.

Well. Consider how Sony's stance on trampling consumers' rights and they have the money to sway the court.

I'd say, time to play dirty.

My rights are also a closed and fair network as well as funding the game industry by buying its games...

No, that is your option to do that. You definitely should have the right to do whatever you want with your hardware. Whether it be play by someone's rules, or play by your own, its your choice.

You misunderstood.

It's my right not have other people meddle in my gaming experiences.

Probably not as you can just pretend to be ignorant to the situation as many people who don't know who Anon is would be doing so without knowing there was an attack on PSN

no, seriously you have no idea what a threat Anonymous really is. They gave the church of scientology a massive black eye, has basically destroyed the lives of the people holding Sgt. Manning captive over the whole wikileaks leaks, and has destroyed a security company. As well as shut down several government websites, among other things. You do not take a threat from them lightly or else they will destroy you.

If good sized portion of Anon is seriously going to target Sony, be very prepared for the PSN to be annihilated (or at least be taken offline for at least a week or two if its not hacked and crippled) as well as probably most of the executives within Sony to have all their personal information Doxed. It wouldn't destroy Sony, but Anon will severely damage them if this is true.

Right, and we suffer along with that.  Why is that a good thing?

You seem to always put them up on a pedastal when they really have no reason what-so-ever t obe.  They have no one's best interest in mind other than their own.

Actually, all their major crusades have helped massively. They made it so PayPal would allow donations to wikileaks, they shut Scientology up, destroyed a security company that was planning on revealing who was apart of the cyber war that is still brewing, hurt governments that stood against freedom of information. Yes they have done some questionable things too. But some good does come from what they do.

Anonymous is a very unique group, as they are actually 100% leaderless. It is basically a coin with a heads and tails side, its a matter which side the coin lands on today that matters which side anonymous will take today. There is also the fact within anonymous there are splinter groups that also flip their own coins. It actually a very good example that the world could work very effectively without true leaders. And when the collective gets together and they decided on what they are going to do it gets done.

And really, Sony suffering for what they are doing would be a fantastic thing. They deserve it. It would definitely put them in their place. And like Machina said, they are more likely to reprice everything in the PS Store to zero or 1cent than bring down the network. Network crashing is normally their last resort (except under certain circumstances). And the easiest way to stop a company in their tracks is to destroy their management teams.

It's not Sony's rights to meddle with people's properties, neither.

No, I mean hackers. Sony gives me free PSN, good PSN games, and enjoyable online gameplay.

@Galaki: I say it's just fine if people use their own for malicious causes. Most do.

and what exactly is this terrible and atrocious thing sony has done, except for using every legal means avaliable to protect their network and preventing piracy?

tell me who exactly is this "Sony" person who needs to be brought down to their knees?

lets just assume anonymous is successful! they completely destroy PSN. they release every code so everyone can play "backups" they set all the prices on PSN to zero so everyone can enjoy free games! and in the end the sony network division just goes out of business, that would be great, for everyone wouldn't it? THEY deserve this, right?

do you actually think anyone else but the consumers and the workers at sony will be hurt by this?

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Interesting, I wonder how far they will go.

Dear Greedy Motherfuckers SONY,

Congratulations! You are now receiving the attention of Anonymous. Your recent legal actions against fellow internet citizens, GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo have been deemed an unforgivable offense against free speech and internet freedom, primary sources of free lulz (and you know how we feel about lulz.)

You have abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information about how your products work. You have victimized your own customers merely for possessing and sharing  information, and continue to target those who seek this information. In doing so you have violated the privacy of thousands of innocent people who only sought the free distribution of information. Your suppression of this information is motivated by corporate greed and the desire for complete control over the actions of individuals who purchase and use your products, at least when those actions threaten to undermine the corrupt stranglehold you seek to maintain over copywrong, oops, "copyright".

Your corrupt business practices are indicative of a corporate philosophy that would deny consumers the right to use products they have paid for, and rightfully own, in the manner of their choosing. Perhaps you should alert your customers to the fact that they are apparently only renting your products? In light of this assault on both rights and free expression, Anonymous, the notoriously handsome rulers of the internet, would like to inform you that you have only been "renting" your web domains. Having trodden upon Anonymous' rights, you must now be trodden on.

If you disagree with the disciplinary actions against your private parts domains, then we trust you can also understand our motivations for these actions. You own your domains. You paid for them with your own money. Now Anonymous is attacking your private property because we disagree with your actions. And that seems, dare we say it, "wrong." Sound familiar?

Let Anonymous teach you a few important lessons that your mother forgot:
1. Don't do it to someone else if you don't want it to be done to you.
2. Information is free.
3. We own this. Forever.

As for the "judges" and complicit legal entities who have enabled these cowards: You are no better than SONY itself in our eyes and remain guilty of undermining the well-being of the populace and subverting your judicial mandate.

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not Forgive.
We do not Forget.
Expect us.

Looks like Sony got Anon's attention?

Oh, those poor "thousands" of innocent people who only sought the "free" (pirated) distribution of information...
