Except theres no sacrifice of liberty- I can still hack my ps3 if I want and do with it what I will

If Sony wins then your PS3 modding could be punishable by law. Even so little as putting a new casing on it.

Think about that for a moment.

Will they find out about a case mod? Probably not, but it is still the principle of the whole thing. You bought it, it is yours, end of story. Sony doesn't like you modding or hacking, then ban your PSN account.

Unless of course instead you want them to rightfully kill consoles.

Just hope you don't end up as one of those "victims of the system" who do nothing wrong but somehow end up with an unfixable bricked console because guess what, it will happen.

as you said in the post above this one, "I think people are getting paranoid ..."

putting an option to install linux on the ps3 in the first place was the biggest olive branch in the world sony could have done to the hacker/homebrew community to let them run their custom code on a ps3.

but despite that they gave sony the finger anyways -- first with the other OS overflow bug then by deciphering the ps3's security key.

hell, sony also lets you use a standard HDD to upgrade your system unlike the 360's proprietary drive.

sony doesn't give two-shits if you mod your consoles casing and it is ridiculous you'd even think they every will.  sony is trying to protect the billions of dollars in investment they've put into the ps3 and rightfully so.

I wasn't saying that Sony would get anyone for modding their case, I was just giving an example of what a ruling like this one one could ultimately lead to, regardless of how extreme is may be.

Some of you are defending these guys? their actions wont cause change and why defend something like that it makes you look like a follower who couldnt come up with his/her own solution cause you damn sure werent praising these lames before they took down the websites. and for those of you who say sony should work with these guys to fix the problem wtf we dont negotiate with terrorist lmao well americans dont.

Is this a good or bad response towards the hackers? I think Sony would be better off apologising for taking off Other OS and hope the hackers feel sorry for them. Anon is to be taken seriously despite what people think. Sony is in for a very big loss. Judging by Anon's track record they always do what they set out to do.

You dont get anywhere by trying to appease terrorists.

By your logic, Sony's actions of muscling out it's smaller competition over the years is massive terrorism. Remember Bleem!? What about Lik-Sang? Do you give money towards these terrorist acts?

The only difference with this stuff is, corporations have the money to make their acts of terrorism legal.

the otherOS feature also brought forth a massive amount of advancement in the medical field. So do not ignore that.

And deciphering the security key and hypervision was needed. Red Hat, Fedora, and several linux distros funded hacking competitions to try to discover how to improve linux on the PS3. Only way to do it was by bypassing hypervision because it locked out the use of the GPU. If Sony and Nvidia would have just given linux distros the drivers to the RSX there would never have been a reason to try to bypass the hypervision and security.

Sony starting retract the OtherOS function after GPU code was being released so that more advanced visuals could be used by linux distros.

I still cannot fathom how people are so angry with Sony over all of this.  Sony HAD to respond to what was going on.  On one side they had 3rd Party companies talking about how bad it was to the media (I remember reading an EA (I think it was) press release about how devastating the PS3 hacks could be) and on the otherhand you have very concerned Stock Holders.  They had to at least try.

Most of their lawsuits are just plain Silly and really should never have been allowed in court, let alone ruled in their favor.  Once one suit was allowed, why not keep going?  If the court is "sympathetic" to large Corporation A, let us keep pressing our advantage.  Hell, Sony would have been STUPID not to do have pushed the envelope here.

The only thing Sony has done recently to me, that has really irked me, was the removal of Other OS.  This feature missing from the new Slims does not bother me, it is the removal from my Phat 60gig.

The problem with people like Geo is not what they are doing, it is how people use what they have done.  There is nothing worse than running into Map Hackers in any multiplayer game.

I posted it on your wall :)

Sony had a range of responses at their disposal, they willfully chose the one to trample consumer rights. From that point on, they've lost all sympathy as a company just trying to defend their products, much like any violation of rights in the name of security should be frowned upon

how much money do you think Sony is saving on removing other os? Fucking bucket loads I'd bet, I mean I'd wager they put the feature in JUST so they could remove it to save SOO much money, I mean it's not like they launched the damn ps3 for 250 dollars less than what it's worth, they have been profiting off of the ps3 this entire time, and removed other os.....just to fuck with people and of course save SOOO much fucking money, greedy bastards, who are they to modify shit THEY FUCKING OWN.

I could go forever.....and you still wouldn't get it -_-

You act as if getting angry makes your argument stronger.

Point is simple. You are supporting the lose of rights for security in online video games. I understand your argument just well, however I also know that company will continually create fixes to deal with future online issues.

However, you can't so easily create a fix for your lost rights.

Go ahead and think that I am the one not understanding things though. At least I know I am on my side and not on the side of corporation for the sole interest of my video games, which aren't going to suddenly vanish.

yeah like I said to another poster, you fucking HOPE is more like it.

Because benieth the bullshit you support you know as well as I that it takes just ONE of these fucking pieces of shit to find something big that can bring it all crumbling down, and they'll do it to because unlike the people at Sony who are heavily invested in this business these asshole aren't and couldn't care less.

at least with Sony I know the only people that would get fucked over buy this are arrogant naive fucking assholes who will NEVER put in an eighth of the amount of investment Sony has in these products, where's gehots game console huh? where anno's online gaming network huh? these fuckers won't do shit in providing their own but they'll fuck everyone's else up though.

you think Sony is in this for the sole purpose of fucking over their consumer? that if Sony wins this they will do nothing but make products just to fuck over the people who buy them??? You do know without you the consumer there would be no Sony right?

fucking blows my mind this shit, people wouldn't fucking hesitate to post the massive losses Sony has occurred this gen, omg omg 5 plus billionz lost Sony are n teh RED!!! but when they make a decision to cut a feature to save cost which not only makes sense but makes PERFECT fucking sense it's OMG omg $ony are GREEDY, they cut features to line their own pockets.

what a fucking joke, I pity all of you in here supporting these assholes, who couldn't give two fucks about you, against the very company who MADE, invested, and LOST heavily in the very console your currently fucking playing. So they made a tough choice to cut a feature few were using to save on the mass money pit that is the ps3, boo fucking hoo, you people think Sony is making money off this?? probably hurt them more than you, (just look at what the ps3 was suppose to be and see what I mean).

anyway, the naivety and ignorance ASTOUNDS me in this thread.

Good luck to you sir on all your future endevours.

Let us just hope they do not revoke your right to curse left and right along the way.

because there IS someone who owns, spent RnD, produced, and distributed for profit the word FUCK....or any curse word for that matter....

anyway I'm done for now *goes back to GT5*

Do you understand the reprucussions of this case depending on who wins?

Do you understand that if George Hotz wins, you lose nothing? and gain a shitty hacked unsecured network open for cheating and pirates

Do you understand that if Sony wins, you lose rights? lose the right to NOT do what my ps3 was never meant to do, I will be real choked up, honest, there could tears

And you are astounded by my ignorance? no....now I'm amused in a sad, disappointed kind of way

Regardless of what you think or how much you yell, scream or curse at me, I am on your side. are you?

Unfortunately you sir, are not on your own side, but rather the side of the multi-billion dollar corporations who only care about the almighty dollar sign. They don't care about you. And that's why instead of going for a cheap crap upgrade of the ps2, they instead went over board engineering an incredible machine to provide the greatest gaming experience possible for their consumers *well that's me :)* losing over 5 billion dollars  in the process................ yup makes TONS of sense

Jesus dude, Sony cares more for you than these guys, and that's the truth, they wouldn't bother with gaming or any of their business at all if they didn't. You can get away with that multi-billion dollar corporation evil crap with like, bank firms, They are in the business of screwing people over and fucking up peoples lives, taking homes, debt etc. But Sony can't exist without their consumer.....how the hell can you NOT know this......

Um, I don't know if you realized this, but you agreed to a terms of service. Where in the TOS did it say that you were allowed to pirate games and such? Oh yeah, that's right, NOWHERE. And don't even give me that BS about "consumer rights" or the belief that SO many people used the Other OS feature. And then there's the idea that the jailbreak is being used for anything other than piracy. I mean, seriously, what did you all expect? What options were part of this "range of responses," hm? And then there's these guys, supposedly standing up for our rights whilst TAKING AWAY PSN for who knows how long. The fact that some of you can sit here and defend their actions is more than baffling.

I read through all the pages. This is a mildly entertaining thread! I gotta give props to "goforgold", he was the most entertaining while raising some good points inbetween the wild cursing, but that just made it even more entertaining.

My stance on this matter..Um, I guess I'm for Sony. I wouldn't mind seeing the "war" between the "Anonymous" group and Sony though, because throughout the "battles" we can ultimately determine who was right and who was wrong, via their actions.

They should have dealt with the piracy. That was their option, but instead they decided to try to change legal precedent by assaulting people's rights and attacking the coders, who are doing things that are perfectly legal

If anything, Sony should be countersued for harrassing their customers. Hopefully at the end of this they'll be made to reimburse Hotz' legal fees, or something...
