Alright, so me and other gamers might end up without the PSN because some group decides that Sony infringes on their rights?

To all you consumer rights people on here, how does that help me and the other millions of consumers rights who buy a PS3 to play games?

That's kinda like asking how it helps people who want to get an education, when a building gets shut down because of a protest.

The answer?  Stop thinking so short term.

So I'm thinking short term because I can't see how this will help the majority of PS3 owners in any way? Assuming this group gets whatever they want ( I assume Linux and freedom to hack their PS3s), thats a small minority of PS3 Gamers.

A)  A minorities rights are worth a damn because they inconveince the majority.

Seriously, this is the arguement you want to go with.

I mean, minority rights aren't important, so long as they don't effect the majority.  Boondocks avatar, and that's what your going with?

B) It goes on much past that however, since the legal arguement sony has applied is they can literally do anything they want to your PS3 to make you buy a new one.

Including removing things like Blu-ray playback or intentionally brick yours for no reason if they feel like it.

According to Sony, it's perfectly legal for them to brick out of warranty consoles at will, randomly for whatever reason.  If you can't see why that should be illegal... well ok.

I don't know what to say.

I assume you're comparing these consumer rights to the movement of MLK and others fighting for racial justice, etc. That's a bit of an extreme comparison, but I do understand what you're trying to say.

I'm almost positive Sony cannot brick our consoles at will for whatever reason. That's surely a case they would lose in court. This is something we can both agree on. However, I honestly don't think that this comparison is one that would strenthen your argument, because that simply is not a probable result of Sony winning the lawsuit.

I think some of you misunderstand my stance. If you want to hack your console for homebrew etc and keep it to yourself, go ahead. But Sony has an agreement on PSN, and I think it's absolutely fair that you should not be able to access PSN if you tamper with your console. What Geohot did was pretty much completely open the console up for anyone to do whatever they wanted with it, which can eventually lead to me and other honest gamers suffering with hackers online for multiplayer games, so in that respect, I do not support him or his cause.

your naivety and ignorance is astounding, yeah you fucking hope they won't go that far is more like it

eh, really I couldn't care either way. I expect them to just hack the PSN, drop prices, and maybe block the admins forcing the network division to have to hack their own service to change things back.

It will be an epic knockout punch either way. Just one will be a sucker punch that leads to the knockout, and the other will be a brutal punch straight to the nose with brass knuckles.

i'm quickly learning you are a very very scary person.  the posts i've seen you make lately really scare the hell out of me.

I believe and support certain things, Freedom of Information, Civil Rights, and Freedom of Property are three. Sony is violating all three and should be stopped. And the justice system really can't be trusted as its easily bought out and unjust. Its the people who need to stand up for their rights.

what total bullshit, and what's worse is you actuallly believe this shit

What bullshit?

I have every right to modify the products I purchase.

Purchase does NOT mean OWN, you brought a ps3 but you didn't buy the software that runs the ps3, you had to sign a agreement in order to use the firmware, It's SONY'S firmware and they can do what ever the hell they want with it.

I have every right to read, disclose, and have access to information.

NO the FUCK you don't and if you really really think you do your even more naive and ignorant than I thought

I have every right to voice my opinion and take action over things I consider violations of my rights.

Yeah you do

that fucking bullshit

1. I have every right to be able to circumvent the firmware and install my own. I do not follow laws that I refuse to agree with written by strangers and corporate thugs that would rather have all of us on leashes than give us free choice.

The entire point of this is not about Sony's firmware, or ability to use the PSN. It that if I install my own software, Sony can just ban me from their network, and my PS3 stills functions how I want it to. Not me be sued for it. A new network can be programmed to run in its place so the PSN really is not necessary. I have no issue with being banned to secure their network as long as I can have my PS3 and electronics function how i want.

This is why my Droid is jailbroken and was running HTC's firmware at 1.2Ghz. I use my cell phone on my terms, not Motorola's, not Verizon's, not Google's, mine.

2. I really think your the ignorant one. The USA is supposed to be for the people, by the people. Its not by the government, fuck the people. Free information allows the people to make the correct decisions and decide for themselves who to vote for, what to disagree with, what to fight again. There is no real national security. Our elected officials are backstabbing assholes that enjoy having their pockets loaded with lobbyist money and illegal bribes. They will, and do, sell us out as if we are cattle going to a slaughter house. The more transparency there is with information, the less officials will be able to act as if they are for the good of us, because they will know they have no chance in hell of being elected again if they sell us out.

Remember a certain event that happened called the Civil War? While I disagree with what the South wanted, they had ever right to rebel and fight for what they believed in. They gave it their all, and while they lost, they left behind the understanding that if you do not like whats happening, stand up and fight for what you believe is a right.

And this day and age is no different. Just instead of traditional bloodshed, we have an information and cyber war. The only people willing to stand up and fight for our rights to information are the ones that aren't saints and will not stop till the goal is met.

But I guess ignorance is bliss. Being told what your supposed to feel about certain things. Being controlled by the media, government, and even your own parents, and not being able to form your own thought processes. Being told what you can buy, and how your supposed to use it with thought of ever experimenting and testing new things. Its ok, many people are blind. I am not though. I stand by my ideals that I am free. No one controls my actions. No one controls my thoughts. No one controls my desire to help and change this world for the better.  No one controls my beliefs. I educate myself, using all sides of an argument to form my own opinion and judgment.

But I also stand by he moto in my sig.

Perhaps I wasn't sympathetic enough, but how does it make you feel that they are going to do these attacks in your name?

That's kinda like asking how it helps people who want to get an education, when a building gets shut down because of a protest.

The answer?  Stop thinking so short term.

The real answer is that it doesnt, most consumers are not hakers so the only thing athat affects them in this case is a bunch of dick hakers are messing up their gaming experiences.

Wrong. If Sony wins the case then it doesn't just affect your PS3, it will end up affecting any peice of technology you purchase.

If you wish to pay full price to only rent something then more power to you. I on the other hand like to fiddle with shit I buy.

Maybe in conspiracy land or whatever fantasy world your living in. But here, in the real world the sequence of events goes like this: "hakers tried to hack, Sony tries to stop them, Hakers succesfully hack, sony sues their asses, then hakers decide to take down PSN and mess up the experiences of millions of gamers".

I and the majority of consumers have no interesting in haking, i buy game consoles to oplay games on them. If Sony wins then i am not hurt in any way, actually i benefit cause i dont have to worry about hakers on PSN.

You're not hurt, but I am.

What makes YOU special?

Answer that? I hope the answer isn't: "Because I am in the majority" because that argument is weak.

Majority may not hack, but that "majority" does not necessarily include people who wish to mod their hardware, run homebrew on official firmwares, etc...

If you think all of those people exist within the same group then you are mistaken.

Get an xbox, microsoft doesnt mind hombrewers and the rest of your kind.

The rest of us would preffer no hakers on psn, psn is a better place when there arent any hakers in there.

My kind?

My goodness pal, please do some research on this entire subject if you wish to continue any form of reasonable discussion.

PS3 has been hacked for months now and I don't see bitching about their online experience. Give the paranioa a rest.

If not, I simply don't care. I just want Sony to lose this court case and my consumer rights to remain in tact. PSN or video games aren't that important.

I'm not really making that comparison.  Just noting that that's the comparison your making.  Your only defense is "I in the majority am being inconvienced because of something the minority wants."

As for them not being able to win in court?   Considering that's the EXACT arguement Sony is making in the Other OS suit... a suit many people expect they will win...

and if they do lose it's only because they decided to open up a lawsuit vs Geohotz where they now basically have two sets of lawyers argueing completely different things.

Also, if you don't upgrade to the "Linux free" PS3 games, you can't use your PS3 to play games.  Since firmware updates come on disc.

It's not "Linux or PSN".

It's "Linux or PSN Playing Games."

Time to bust out some good ol' Abe Lincoln for you guys.

Video games are important to me but I am not going to sacrifice the freedom of doing what i want with a product i spent with my hard earned money.

I thought that was Ben Franklin.

Or rather, some obsucure guy that lived at the same time as Ben Franklin so it was ascribed to him.

Edit: Yep, Ben Franklin, and the non paraphrased version =

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Really, an even better quote i'd say.

1. This is only going to make sony sympathetic in the eyes of the court, weakening the case against them
