Forums - Sony Discussion - Would you pay to play online?

No chance in hell.

Online gaming was free for years before X-box Live (except for MMOs which have server costs). I don't understand why people actually accept they need to pay when only one service charges for such a basic function. As a consumer it seems backward. If Sony start charging just to play online then I simply won't play online on Playstation products and all online gaming will be done on my PC.

Personally I hope to see a more PC-like online service on PSN with clan servers and more control to users to offset their own server costs.

No f...way

And also notice most of people advocating for paid online are well known x360 fanboys ;)

and the opposite is true.

but by next gen when sony charge.... well... it will be different then wont it.

its coming.

Not any time soon, and even if they did make it a paid serive, I guarantee it would actually be worth while, still continuing with giving free games and discounts and god knows what futures services,

but  enough about the future lets talk about now, basically i agree with what Dahuman said

Depends on the service, if it is for a closed league that has a lot of extras like leagues, moderation, and anti-cheat like CEVO or an MMO, yeah.  Otherwise for pubs, probably not.

Keep dreaming. There will be some who accept that obviously but i'd simply fall back to playing online only on pc.

XBL is not worth the money, and is one of the reasons why I don't have a 360 anymore. I can find alternative free options anywhere else.

Well said

IMO the advantage the Live store had has quickly disappeared now as the other markets have caught up. Now there's no real difference between the free, it isn't worth $60 a year with an initial $100 setup cost. Heck, with that I could buy a Wii or a PS3 second-hand!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

i switched from having a 360 to buying a ps3 because i did the math and decided it was cheaper to buy a ps3 than pay for a live gold account.  but i do value playing online.

honestly, if i had to i would because i want to play online.  but i would be very very annoyed and i couldn't promise i wouldn't switch to a different platform if i deemed it a viable alternative.

MMORPGs: Yes

Online service like Xbox Live or PSN: No chance in Hell

ironic

No way, I dont know in advance how much time I will have to play..  so I dont want to be paying for something I dont use enough (I know alot of XBOX people in this scenario)
