Perhaps there should be a happy medium...
its appears that many people here seem to believe that Sony must be running a loss through PSN, as they do not charge for it, citing that they believe that this cannot go on and they will ahve to follow the Xbox Live example. (i'm sure PSN does alright out of PSN Plus and store purchases to cover most of the costs).
Xbox live is not about covering costs of running the service, it's about making money, profit, from those people who subscribe.
So what if...
Perhaps if every game had an added $1 to the RRP which went into the upkeep of the online environment, you wouldn't need to pay for the online subscription.
You probably wouldn't even notice the difference overall. $1 isn't much per game, if you're not a big gamer, you will only buy a small number of games a year, and if you are an avid gamer you may buy more, but you wouldn't have to pay the online subscription cost, and because EVERY game has the added $1, that adds up to a lot of money for the upkeep of the online community.
