Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Rare: We've Only Used 10% Of Kinect's Technical Capabilities

Smidlee said:

This is like saying a movie only uses 10% of your HDTV.

explain.

Kinect research is finding something new that can be used with Kinect all the time. I think it can be a true statement... how they get percentages though is sort of odd haha

Yes, but the Playstation 3 is a complex console. Kinect is a camera. I don't see how you can develop for "10% of capabilities" of a CAMERA.

Kinect is also a microphone... and you cant do what you can do with the kinect, on the eye cam or whatever. And complex console... wtf does that even mean

I agree with that other guy above with his HDTV statement.

Kinect might be a sensor, microphone, camera etc, whatever you want to call it. But in the end you can't develop for "10% of Kinect's capabilities". There might be a few more tricks you could pull off in the future, but in the end, Kinect isn't complex, it does the job it was designed to do.

The reason why I used the PS3 as an example of something which has much more potential than it had in 2007 is because it is a complex console, developing for a console is different. The PS3 has a very odd and uknown architecture, developers have to try and squeeze out every polygon and pixel they can, and never have I heard a developer saying they have only developered for "10% of the PS3's capabilities".

What a rediculous statement. I think SpartenOmega his the nail on the head when he said "April fools".

For a technology that is brand new and they seem to be founding out how to do things very often it is very possible that it has huge capabilites, I also stated that I dont know this can be managed in a number, but I think they are just starting to crack the iceberg, whether that is 10 percent to some people then hell make it 10percent.

Also 10 percent of the ps3's capabilities, if you want to argue that Kinect does everything now that it was designed to do then the same argument is for ps3, it plays games, it plays movies and you can go on the internet. Capabilities reached... no more.

Now dont compare the damn two consoles because the ps3 has nothing to do with this thread.

If they didn't max it out why are the graphics so bad in Kinect sports then?

The graphics are fine in Kinect Sports. What did you expect... Crysis 2??

How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...

Xbox 360 wants to KinectPS3 wants to Move!  Why are both systems having such relationship problems?  The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

No, I just expected something greater then last gen. :P

Seriously though, I do not think realistic graphics for some games work as well as cartoony graphics, and I think Kinect Sports is one of those cases.

OT: Talking about hardware is great and all, but at least have quality games to take advantage of said hardware.

"Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth." -My good friend Mark Aurelius

If I were a game designer, I'd make a game like Rainbow Six or something where I played with the controller but I had the option to talk to my squadmates.  I'd say "Hey Bob, go take out that sniper in that building.  Jeff, cover that door." and Kinect's microphone would pick up the commands.  Toss in hand gestures, too like the "Eyes on target" sign or the "Room is clear" sign.  That's just me.

Hell, I'd be happy with a port of Seaman where I could talk to my Gillman/Frogman with enhanced voice recognition and reach inside his virtual aquarium and pick him up, pet him, hit him,  or throw him when he gets snippy.

No, I didn't realize that I had logged in with a different account at the time I made my post.

Why are people ripping on Kinect Sports? It's a pretty solid game, the best along with Dance Central, for Kinect.

Viva Pinata is a solid game as well, Rare get bashed far too much and compared to yesteryear.

It's also people that likely WANT rare games to suck, always PS3 and Wii owners that wouldn't play them either way ...

Or they are like me and have played the games of the new Rare. Well, not Viva Pinata or Kinect Sports, but games like Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Conker, Kameo and Banjo which range from disapointing to "I can't believe they released this".

THIS.

I cannot believe Grabbed by the Ghoulies was ever released. Stinking pile of crap. I almost bought it because I loved Rare. Even Starfox Adventures was awesome for me.
