How long do they take? Or does it depend on the State?

The manager I spoke to told me that the background check should only take a day unless there is a criminal history or something like unpaid parking tickets. I haven't ever committed a crime and I did the drug test the same day I had my interview and haven't done any drugs. This was last Friday.

Should I call them? I assumed it would be a short wait.

If anyone was employed by Walmart, or knows anything about Walmart's background checks, could you please tell me how long the wait usually is and if I should contact them or not?

If they don't call you back doesn't that mean you didn't get the job?

You'd think they wouldn't do a background check unless they planned to hire. Up here in Canada at least in my city (Not under RCMP control) you have to pay like 60$ for a background check and another 20$ for finger printing and even more for urine tests. If Walmart was spending all that money on you , you'd think they would plan on hiring you.

Or did you pay for the background check yourself? I went to work for RealCanadianSuperstore and they made me pay for my background check. But even then I was told I was hired prior to taking the check and was told I needed the test to start working.

You'd be surprised. I've had companies drop me at every stage of the hiring process, including after points where they should logically have been committed.

Maybe they found something that made them change their mind.

Could a Canadian explain what do they even check in these checks? I'm planning to move to Quebec in a few years, and when applying for jobs here (Israel), I never needed to do any of that stuff.

I had a federal police background check into me when I started working at Sony in Australia. But then again, it would make sense considering I help make BR/DVD releases and they surely wouldn't want to employ a member of piracy organisation or something.

Sometimes it is justified. But Walmart? F off. Drug test? F off. Thats just ridiculous.

They run the background check before the call you. Its a way for them to know if they need to find someone else. Then they call you, you pick of med forms, and go get your drug test. After that, if you passed, your basically hired.

background checks shouldn't take that long. A day tops, unless a state has some extreme background check laws.

This depends, I have only been required by one company to get a background check and that was Real Canadian Superstore. I have never heard about people here in BC getting urine tests or doing background checks. However you have to understand British Columbia where I live is probably drastically different then Quebec.

But for the most part Canada has stiffer privacy laws then in the US and I'm not sure how much testing that an employer can demand. Also I had several friends who have worked at Walmart and I asked one and he said he never needed a drug test.

So from the looks of it their won't be much checking. Also if your moving from Israel to Canada are you able to do so with a record? I know American's with records are often turned down when they apply to live here. Infact with a record a Canadian is often not even allowed into the USA.

I wonder how a record check would work if you just moved here. The RCMP would have no record to check lol.

Neither do I have a record ;). But who knows what they're interested in?

Quebec, as I hear, is more lenient on immigration laws - but either way, I don't think that any part of Canada is particularily keen on accepting people with a record. All checks are done by the embassy before you're given a visa so taht covers who's in and who isn't.
