BioShock chief tells Play why Infinite won’t support Move…

Ken Levine has revealed why BioShock Infinite won’t support Move in an exclusive interview with Play.

“I’d never want to throw in Move support just because it’s going to make some first party happy or because some marketing department wants it on the box because, at the end of the day, gamers know,” he admitted. “If you don’t have anything special to say about that control device gamers are going to know.”

However, the BioShock chief is open to the idea of 3D gaming and doesn’t say whether BioShock Infinite will support 3D as an option or not.

“3D is a little bit different… it’s something I’d be more open to. I’m not saying whether we’re doing that or not but it’s sort of a passive integration. Unlike movies, you don’t just shoot it differently. Games are 3D. But I think if you’re going to get out, front and centre on something, you have to be able to say you’re doing something special with it. Especially with a control device.

“Do you want to play BioShock and it’s like, ‘okay, do you want to harvest or save Little Sister? Waggle left to harvest, waggle right to save!’ You can have Move support on your box but people are going to know you’re cheating them.”

To read the full interview with Ken Levine, where he talks about multiplayer, marketing departments, the BioShock tricks he’s leaving behind, one of the game scenarios involving Elizabeth and why Irrational will never make a Left 4 Dead clone, grab issue 203 of Play, on sale from Imagine e-Shop now.

Fair enough comment. If it isnt designed for that control system why just tack it on ?

It will probably upset some Move afficionados but I'd rather a fluid gaming experience to thoughtless integration for the hell of it.

kind of a lame reason,  move is really just an alternate control scheme.  i mean i go back and forth between dual shock and move for kz3.  if they can make it work i do appreciate the option for pointer controls on shooters, they don't have to make it amazingly innovative or a marking focus or anything like that.

i seriously, the example of waggle left or right to save is really really dumb.  what?!? pressing X or O is soo much different and immersive?  heck, move has an X an O buton on it so you wouldn't even have to use waggle.

Not to mention, you don't "waggle" at all with Move, or you get no response.

Regardless, doesn't matter much to me, I would play it with mainly the 360 controller anyway.

well, with move you don't have to make a game that relies on waggle.  you can't always program waggle in if that's what you want. xD

but yeah, i'm not heartbroken about a lack of move controls but maybe a bit disappointed on the supposed reason.

100% agree with him.  Mind you, I'm translating his somewhat clunky comments to "there's no point doing it unless it's right for the game and given proper focus in development" which is what I think he's saying.

What's up with the lack of clear quotes these days from industry veterans?  Everything seems to be a clunky mix of statements.  Maybe the result of the way questions are put?  Lack of skill on the interviewing side?

Anyway, ramblnig off topic but what happened to clear, concise statements is my topic of the day it seems.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Ironic, with Heavy Rain in your sig.

why do you say dumb things like that.

just because it sony tech doesnt mean you have to praise someone, for not wanting to use it.

this guys reasoning is retarded, no one is forcing him to to make waggle controls. (there are buttons you know, tactile buttons).

the only thing including move controls would do is potentially increase sales for both move and this game because of the recongition it wotld get.

move is a great tech that should/can get incorporated into nearly every game, get over it

Try playing it that way and you won't get very far.

That's exactly what it is, though... I have tried it. There are a number of commands that literally just ask you to shake the controller. It's more waggle than even the most casual of Wii games. Heavy Rain with move is one of my biggest disappointments. Remember, I reviewed the game, and gave it a 9.1, but it is nothing but waggle with Move. Simple and silly. My hope was that with Move it would actually mimmick your character's actions, but it was just used to shake to replace button presses and joystick spins. The very definition of waggle.
