Is this something really that uncommon in Japan?

When buildings are floating off into the distance and half a city bursts into flames, I'd like to think that's pretty uncommon.

Earthquakes are common, but something of this magnitude indeed is uncommon.

I'm lucky, because I live in the South and we felt nothing here. But I hope the other members in the affected areas are OK.

Terrible desaster, aparently at 8.9 it's the largest quake ever recorded in Japan.

Man I knew Japan was prone to Earthquakes but this is huge. I was watching the video footage on BBC, it was insaine they followed a tital wave into the city as it destroyed buildings and washed away cars. I hope Canada and the US and other countries send aid immediatly. This is way worse then New Orleans, heck I'd expect the US troops stationed in Japan to be fully mobalized to assist the Japanese army. Canada always offers to send troops from or PRT units.

I'm sure aid organisations will be on this very fast. I just hope the international community can work together to help our Japanese brothers.

Al-jazeera reported 25-30 confirmed casualties but after seeing the footage, good god I hope they were able to evacuate the people early.

Countries affected by it =>  Philippines, Taiwan, Russia, Mexico, Hawaii, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, South America..  My parents felt it aswell in Shanghai..  Huge disaster...
