Wondering why Nintendo pumps out so many Mario games? After checking the database, I've found that every single Mario game released so far this gen has sold at least 1 million copies. 7 on DS, 5 on Wii -- 12 for 12 in the current gen.
New Super Mario Bros. - 12.05m
Mario Kart DS - 8.40m
Super Mario 64 DS - 5.11m
Mario Party 8 - 3.46m
Super Mario Galaxy - 3.01m
Super Paper Mario - 1.83m
Mario Hoops 3 on 3 - 1.62m
Mario and Luigi 2: Partners in Time - 1.47m
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games - 1.42m
Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis - 1.39m
Mario Party DS - 1.10m
Mario Strikers Charged - 1.04m
Total sales - 42 million
How long can Nintendo keep this up? I know of 4 more announced Mario games.
Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games DS
Mario Baseball Wii
Mario Kart Wii
Dr. Mario WiiWare
Dr. Mario on WiiWare might miss the mark, but then we might never get numbers for it.
For comparison, it appears there were 18 Mario million-sellers last gen, and another 6 or 7 which missed the mark (or else there isn't complete data for), which totalled over 57 million in sales.
Can we blame Nintendo for putting Mario in everything?
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
