Forums - Sales Discussion - Bulletstorm Will Top 1 Million, Helped by Fox News, says Epic

Industrygamers

Epic's Bulletstorm only launched a couple weeks ago, but it's doing quite well for itself, according to Epic Games President Mike Capps. The shooter has clearly captured the attention of core gamers, as retailers were quick to put in reorders.

"We got a reorder on day one from one of the big U.S. retailers that focuses on games," Capps told us during GDC, likely referring to GameStop. "So that was a pretty good feeling."

He added, "[Launching a new IP] is really hard. I read something that less than 1% of console games this generation launched as new IP sold a million units. So if you don't sell a million units you lost money, basically. I'm pretty confident we'll be on the good side of that [1 million] number. I'd rather sell Gears-type numbers that'd be fantastic."

We also asked Capps if the controversy surrounding Bulletstorm (generated by Fox News) ultimately gave the game more exposure and helped sales. "There are two ways to answer the question. The first is what it does for Bulletstorm and the second is what it does for the industry. For what it did for Bulletstorm... yes, there were people who were very excited about any attention at all. For a game that's over-the-top, they probably helped sell more units than they convinced people to pick at us," he said. "What was most exciting about it for me [was the reaction from the media in the industry defending us]. Every journalist said this Fox report is junk... It's wonderful to see a media that's defending free speech."

"As for what it does for the industry as a whole I think it's terrible. There are people who really respect Fox News' opinions and look at that and are [convinced that video games are bad]."

This seems really unlikely.  VGC has 2552 games listed for PS3/360/Wii  Even if we ignore the fact that most of these aren't new IPs, a lot are the same game on multiple platforms, not all games are tracked, and a lot of them are region specific versions, let's see if we can find 25 new IPs that hit 1 million.

Not sure if I should count new IPs with multiple releases, but we'll see.

Wii Sports
Wii Play
Wii Sports Resort
Wii Fit
Wii Fit Plus
Just Dance
Just Dance 2
Wii Party
Carnival Games
EA Sports Active
Wii Music
Deca Sports

Not looking good for the statement, already halfway there and this is just 2 million sellers on the Wii.

Game Party
My Fitness Coach
Game Party 2
High School Musical Sing it
Big Beach Sports
We Ski
Active Life Outdoor Challenge
Rock Band
Carnival Games Mini Golf
Red Steel
Boom Blox
Game Party 3
Monster 4x4 World Circuit
Endless Ocean
Udraw Studio

So there you go, more than 1% of all games released this generation were new IPs on the Wii that sold over 1 million.  Now to be fair, I'm not completely sure stuff like Game Party or Monster 4x4 has never had a release in previous generations, but even so, there is no way less than 1% of new IPs hit 1 million.  Plus I skipped over some licensed stuff like Disney, Hasbro, etc that I wasn't sure if I should count.

Scanning through quickly I see another 25 new IPs on PS3 and 35 on 360.  This isn't even counting games that hit 1 million across multiple platforms.

The only way I can maybe see this being right is if he is only looking at NPD numbers since that would be US only and no bundles,  Even then it seems a little unlikely.  Maybe if it was 1% of all games released in the US were new IPs that broke 1 million in their debut game.

knew this whole fox news thing is an advertising plot.

1 million are still low sales for Bulletstorm though. I expected much more.

Yeah, cause Fox News is crap anyways. All they do is bash Democrats and our President. Glenn Beck is a smart man, but all he does is show the negative side of things. Every time he's on all he does is point at everything that's bad with the government, the economy, the people, the history, etc... I would love to hear him say one thing positive about the government and the President. That'll never happen.  Fox News: Fair and Balanced my a$$.

I'm happy that Bulletstorm is selling so well though. It'll probably break a million by the end of the month.
