Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mark Rein: If 3DS could 'deliver' Unreal Engine 3, we'd be on it

The guy was clear enough.  No need to flame him if anyone is thinking of it.  I'm sure they've examined it, no one would willingly ignore it without trying to at least get rich quick on shovelware.  Epic and Nintendo just don't mesh at the moment, no biggie.

Licensing Unreal Engine 3 goes directly against attempting to get rich quick on shovelware. And Epic themselves creating 3DS shovelware goes directly against trying to sell Unreal Engine 3 to other developers.

I thought someone might say this lol.  In which case, they really don't mesh.  Not like it's anything new, no big loss.  I don't think many were expecting these types of games.

like i said in the other thread , Unreal Engine is useless, its meh , and its a resource monster, the only good thing about it is that it is cheap.

Not sure what you consider not "meh". It is an engine and there are some good games on it. So depends on the developer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unreal_Engine_games

there are a lot of games using it , because like i said, its very cheap , its the cheapest "HD" compatible engine on the market, so if developers looking for more profit but more buggy engine and dark glossy jelly-like shaders, they use this.

to me, this

Looks better than this

and one of them is 5 years older than the other.

Unreal engine is one of the reasons why some people find games nowadays so "Grey", colorless, grainy and unispiring

No one cares about them not making games for the 3DS. It has more of an affect on the developers who use there tech to make games. Those guys who are too lazy to create their own gaming systems. Who happens to go to Epic for theres. Will not and support the 3DS with out their tools.

LOL, that's Epic's loss. Crytek has been ON RECORD as saying that they're interested in seeing what they can do with 3DS. Team Meat just now got 3DS development kits. Rovio is bringing Angry Birds. Who knows what else we have coming up with e3 this year. Nintendo is getting big time developer support for 3DS. Not having Epic isn't a big loss.

Team meat and Angry bird team are very different to Epic.

Jeez, they don't like Nintendo, they don't and people keep asking them about it.

"There's nothing against Nintendo. I hate that people somehow think that's the case,"

Someone didn't read the OP.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

"Why do people keep asking about the platforms we don't love"

People who don't know anything about game engine programming just don't understand. It's quite obvious that given how "alien" a platform the 3DS is compared to the PS3, 360, and other systems it's not much being able to power it as it would having to create a whole new engine from the ground up. An engine that can run 3D non-stop, an engine that is optimized for the specific hardware specs, and an engine that can run at full FPS. Break that down into timing it would take someone like Epic several months to make that original engine, thus making it totally different from Unreal Engine 3's basic coding.

Break that down into licensing, everyone who wants to use the tech would have to fork out major cash just for that specific engine, not Unreal Engine 3, and that's where you start losing profit. Engines like Unreal are profitable because you can develop for the PS3, 360, and PC using the same assets and tools with minimal need for scaling...break that down into having to fork out a license of a totally seperate engine for only ONE platform, that would require as much if not more manpower to develop specific assests and code for just the 3DS, which means budget costs go up, and if the 3DS version bombs it's practically as bad as if the multi-platform version bombed as well.

my school has a liscence to their engine and ill tell you that out of alll the engines me and my friend work with at school ill say that unreal is difficult and it just does alot of unecessary things like when we try to import our character models we have to go through way to much when an engine like unity has the ability to just drop the model into the program. but if you take the time to learn it its great from what some seniors up here have done.

So?

I'm sure that Capcom, Crytek, Konami, EA, and Ubisoft aren't that much different from Epic.

Epic doesn't like Nintendo, and I'm plainly pointing out that Nintendo doesn't need Epic so it isn't a big loss for them. Calm Down.

Alien? Come on now. Have you seen the footage of Super Street Fighter IV? Both Resident Evils? Metal Gear Solid? Dead or Alive? Seems to me like the Japanese developers are able to bring their stuff over to 3DS with no problem whatsoever.

exactly epic is trippin and alot of what brio said is speculation. if nintendo gave me 3ds tools i could make a short demo using the unreal engine.
